Inability to conceptualize endings

I feel like an idiot when writers talk about "figuring out the ending" early in the process. Or even figuring out the ending midway through the process. I feel like my ending-gene is deficient, or missing, or something. Does anyone else find themselves baffled/jealous of writers who can nail down their desired ending? Is being skilled at plotting the ending of a story a unique art?
