Hi friends, I just found this sub and want to share my story. I've been making sites since the 90s. I started in the living room of my mom's house on the first computer she bought us. My first site was about me and my favorite things- you know photos of Surge and weenie dogs lol.
My next site was about my favorite band nine inch nails. It had a hit counter and guest book everything. I even got some emails from other nin sites to join their site ring which I though was cool. I made a bunch of other weird artsy sites with no purpose. I took art in college and made sites for my "portfolio". I made a few super cheap sites for local businesses. Literally like 3 sites. Then I got a job at an office, not as a webmaster, but I redesigned their website anyways because no one else knew how to do it. I've been working at the same office for the past 10 years pushing papers and all the while updating their website. First I made it on dreamweaver then I made it in Muse, then last year I finally transitioned it to WordPress. I made other sites in WordPress to learn the ropes.
Since then I've been pushing the website I made for my office hard with SEO keywords and content updates. The site never brought us much leads until I did that and it's pretty cool to see this new explosion of leads. That was my first taste of the POWER of SEO.
I never really took my website creating skills seriously but now I am. Now that I'm old and pretty much failed at everything else I've tried. No one will pay me for my mediocre design and web skills so I'm just going to use them to make money for myself. I remember some friends asking me to make websites for them but when I asked them to pay they were offended or something. I applied for several graphic design and web jobs out of college. I actually got an offer on a web designer job but turned it down because the office I work at offered me a raise...dumbass me. I guess you could say I have some anxiety problems that prevented me from leaving my current position. Damn I could kick myself for not taking that job.
Anyways a year ago I read about niche sites. So I decided to make a reference/information site. It's taken me a year to finish the site. The traffic on my reference site is 1000 hits per month. That seems low compared to all you guys but for me it's a lot. The site for my office gets about 1/4 of that. Mainly because it's a very unique small business in the middle of nowhere that no one searches for.
Then I realized I can't make as much money with my reference site as I can with an AM product review site so I am making one of those now. I'm super psyched about it. I've got a lot of ideas for this niche I'm in because it can span from products to software. I have no idea how to get money from software reviews so I'm starting with the Amazon product stuff and going from there.
I have a few other niches I am excited about but just haven't had the time to work on those especially since I am still at my office job. I figure if I just keep working on my reference site and the 1 affiliate marketing site, I can get somewhere...sorry for the long post!
