My cousin fell from our tandem bike, and he stamped his head against a handrail.
We always loved to travel through our beautiful city. It served a purpose; my cousin was born with a marvelously great gift, an endless memory. He used to recall every dimension, inch, corner and detail of our trip. When we arrived home, he would portray his mental scanning of the street into a clay model or a huge canvas. He was lucky, since that was his career. Wealthy people would pay serious amounts for his extraordinary works of art.
He fell into a coma. The doctors couldn't tell if it was going to be permanent or not. Our family still had hope and we wished that this great mind could overcome this catastrophe.
Many that wake up from a coma don't remember their long, passive journey. The ones that do can describe dreams, but usually the memories are vague and confusing.
His case was different. He remembered everything.
He locked himself in his room when he got home, and he began to paint restlessly. He took breaks to bring some food and to do his necessities. He didn't talk to us.
We never interrupted him; he was extremely dedicated to his work, and we thought it was a positive form of distraction. We didn't really get to see his paintings, he was isolated and he locked his room meticulously.
My cousin had a stroke and died.
When I was cleaning his room, I found out about the contents of the paintings. I’ve never been so concerned in my entire life. I will describe some of them:
- Something that seemed like a pitch dark room. The only thing I could distinguish was a ceramic floor. It was called “Playground”.
- A tall, skinny man in a suit holding the hands of a little girl. The painting only shows their back, and the two characters are standing on a road. Afar you can see a big house without windows. It is decorated with children.
- Close-up shot of the moon at night, as if it was taken with an old camera. The texture of its terrain seemed completely different from real life photos of the satellite. At the left bottom corner you can see a blurry figure.
- A group of people in a courtroom. They seem to laugh in joy as they shoot large white sacks lying on the ground using nail guns.
- A drilled hole, deep in an ice cap. At the end of the hole, a severed pile of hooves can be seen. The painting is titled “The home of Adam”.
- A masked man spreading a suspicious substance around surfaces inside a metro. This one is called “Advertising strategy”.
- A young naked woman licks a fresh spinal cord. This painting is untitled.
- An unfinished depiction of myself looking at these paintings. The part of the canvas behind me is blank. This one is called “FINISH IT”.
