A Shattered Dreams Production: All That Glitters Isn’t Gold

On Smackdown, we have a vignette of a Garfield like Goldust out of shape reclining in a leather chair staring hypnotically into the television set. On the screen rolled the infamous Hollywood Backlot Brawl between Goldust and Roddy Piper. “Now those were the days... I would do anything to have another moment in the limelight, one last feature film...” The TV Screen suddenly shuts off. “Hey what’s going on?” Goldust reluctantly gets off the recliner to adjust the antennas. “It’s not the antennas.” a voice says. Goldust takes a look behind and sees Mandy Rose his former Mixed Match partner. “It doesn’t have to be over, I can see one more feature film. Rocky, 1976.” Mandy puts the tape into the VCR, showing the famous Rocky training montage. “This will be your comeback story, the script writes itself. A beloved fighter coming out of retirement to prove he still has it one last time.” A cynical Goldust hisses at the idea, saying nobody wants to see Goldust anymore. “Even better yet I can be your new Marlena.” This entices Goldust and agrees on this new lease on life.

Through the weeks, we see vignettes of Goldust recreating famous scenes from the Rocky montage, concluding with Goldust dragging himself up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum Of Fine Arts. Goldust extends his fist is in the air as Mandy cheers on. He spraypaints the Rocky Statue gold but the police chase after them.

In his Smackdown return, Goldust comes out to the ring with Mandy Rose in a matching gold dress and sporting a cigar in homage Marlena. In a quick squash match, Goldust gets an impressive win against his former tag team member R-Truth. The following weeks, he pulls upset victories over Orton and Balor, shocking not only the WWE Universe, but himself as well. As he builds momentum, he is namedNumber One Contender for Shinsuke Nakamura’s Intercontinental Title at TLC

The following week, a leaner Goldust cuts a promo from a director’s chair with Mandy by his side. “While Nakamura is a bonafide Japanese megastar, it will not stop us...” A disturbance is heard in the back, some sort of growl. “As I was saying, it will not stop us.” “OHH PRETTY LADY!” Suddenly Otis appears on set reading Mandy Rose’s new magazine upside down. Goldust slaps Otis and the two get in a huge brawl with Mandy Rose breaking it up. “You actually like that freak?” Goldust asks Mandy as she rolls her eyes simply at the thought. The two have match which Goldust wins with ease. Nakamura ambushes Goldust after the match with a steel chair, laying out his challenger before their match at TLC.

TLC: Shinsuke Nakamura vs Goldust: The two make their flamboyant entrances, and have a showdown in the ring. Plenty of mind games abound. Shinsuke shouts Come on! as Nakamura puffs his chest in and does his taunt. The two have a ridiculously close affair but Nakamura hits a Kinshasa! Nakamura goes for the pin, but Rose distracts. She goes in to kiss Nakamura but she plants his him with a cigar burn! Goldust rolls up Nakamura to become new Intercontinental Champion! After the match, Goldust tops his win by securing a date with Mandy Rose!

The following Smackdown, we see Goldust and Mandy Rose out at a local restaurant with the newly won Intercontinental Championship. Goldust tells Mandy how he fells like a new man with her by his side and appreciates her seeing the potential he had. Mandy says seductively that if that title makes you feel like a new man than this will as will. Mandy goes in for the kiss but the candles out and we are left in darkness. A disturbance is heard and then someone gets a flashlight on... IT’S THE FIEND! A bloodied Goldust is left in the wreckage of a broken table. The Fiend scares off Mandy Rose.

The next week, a new episode of Firefly Funhouse plays. Bray Wyatt apologizes for the action of The Fiend, saying he admires Goldust because he relates to him. That the world thinks that they are just a bunch of crazy wackos... but the difference is that Goldust is shallow and egocentric, always wanting to be famous, desperately craving for their love. That the facade Goldust was bred from insecurity, much like The Fiend. Let’s see who has the greatest insecurity.

Goldust touts back that the set of the Firefly Funhouse has become drastically smaller since the first six episodes. With his help, he can expand the Firefly Funhouse into a feature film. He urges Bray to listen to his heal glove because he needs Goldust to solidify himself. But if he doesn’t join him, he will do anything to continue his Rocky story.

Royal Rumble: The Fiend vs Goldust: The Fiend dominates most of the match, but Goldust holds his own and makes a triumphant comeback. But after twenty minutes, Bray hits a Sister Abigail! After the match, The Fiend is holding the Intercontinental title in his hand and he starts listening to his heal glove. The Fiend leaves the Intercontinental Title on the carcass of Goldust because he needs it more, a sign of The Fiend’s respect.

However on the Smackdown after, Goldust relinquishes the title saying he doesn’t deserve the belt since he lost, he announces his retirement and attempts to leave. Backstage Mandy Rose tells him not to give up now, that he still has hope. That he could start training his successor to Shattered Dreams Production, Creed 2015. She claims she knows just the guy. She opens the door and Velveteen Dream enters the room. He extends his hand to Goldust. “The name is Dream, Velveteen Dream.” Goldust hisses and unimpressed with her selection. “You do know he is the longest reigning NXT North American Champion and the iron man in the last night’s rumble?” Goldust is still remains reluctant to team with the Dream. Mandy pulls Goldust aside “Listen I revitalized your career, you need to trust me that this kid is future, I have your best interest at heart.” “Fine he’s got one chance..” “All I need is one chance.”

Velvteen Dream vs Daniel Bryan: In Velveteen’s Smackdown debut, he has a match with Daniel Bryan to determine one half of the match for the vacant Intercontinental title. The two put on a hot contest but ultimately Dream scores an upset victory! The other half of the match will be none other than former intercontinental champion, the man Goldust beat, Shinsuke Nakamura!

Before their match, Goldust meets with Velveteen Dream backstage. “Sorry about being so rude when you debuted kid, you have a lot of potential. Here I brought you a little something to hopefully make up for it.” Dream opens the box and inside of it are updated trunks and boxing gloves from Dream’s match with Kassius Ohno. “Good luck kid” Goldust tells him as he makes his way out to the ring. Mandy Rose smiles at the heartwarming interaction, knowing her clients are on the same page.

Elimination Chamber: Velvteen Dream vs Shinsuke Nakamura for the Vacant Intercontinental Title: Another clash of flamboyant egos, this one has plenty of mind games at hand with Dream paying homage to Goldust, doing many of his signature taunts and move such as the eye poke. Nakamura hits the kinsasha on Dream and goes for the pin, but Mandy tries to distract Nakamura. But this time Nakamura doesn’t buy it and blows her a kiss from afar. 1..2.. DREAM KICKS OUT! Dream fights his way back through the match and nails a Curtain Call! 1..2..3! Dream is the New Intercontinental Champion! As Dream holds the IC title, Goldust and Rose kiss and celebrate the protege’s victory.

Over the weeks, Dream valiantly defends his intercontinental title against the likes of Ali and a rematch with Aleister Black. Goldust continuously eyes the title he used to hold teasing jealousy. In a backstage segment, Mandy Rose buys a new purple dress in support of Dream and asks Goldust’s opinion on it and he bluntly states it looks fine with no enthusiasm. He says you look good but dress not so much.Over the weeks, Mandy looks less and less like Marlene, furthering the divide between Goldust and Mandy.

Though tensions are teased, Golden Dream earns a Number One Contender’s Match for the Smackdown Tag Titles against Heavy Machinery at Fastlane.

Fastlane: The Golden Dream vs Heavy Machinery: A match full of comedic bits with Otis still getting distracted by Mandy Rose on ringside, Velveteen Dream hits a Deep Valley Driver on Otis and pulls Goldust over him to win the tag titles! The Golden Dream now have all the the Smackdown titles except the WWE Championship.

Inspired by his protege’s success and ultimately wanting to outdo Dream to impress Mandy, Goldust says he wants one final shot at the biggest gold, the WWE Championship which is currently held by Brock Lesnar. Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman scoff at the idea that Goldust could even compete with the Beast Incarnate. Heyman claims he wouldn’t even last five minutes. Dream defends Goldust saying while his body may be tired, his heart will never give up. If Goldust makes it past five minutes, then he gets a WWE Championship match next week. Goldust comes out to the ring in the same style trunks and gloves that Dream wore when he won his IC title but only in gold. Lesnar continues to laugh at his ridiculous outfit. The match begins with an F5, and everybody thinks it’s over. 1..2.. GOLDUST KICKS OUT! During the match Lesnar throttles Goldust, rag dolling him left and right. Chances look slim for Goldust making it pass the five minute mark but Goldust pulls out a Curtain Call out of nowhere! 4:58, 4:59, 5:00! A bloodied Goldust survives The Beast!

The following week, Lesnar and Goldust have their rematch, this time for the WWE Championship. Just like last week, Brock Lesnar dominates Goldust but Goldust refuses to go down. However, eventually Lesnar knocks Goldust out unconscious, forcing the ref to the end the match via DQ. Goldust is carried out on a stretcher with Dream and Rose by his side.

The following week, Heavy Machinery decide to use their rematch clause for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship. Dream pleads for Shane to call off the match because Goldust is still hurting from last week, but Goldust refuses to stay down. The match is set and Dream takes a majority of the offense for the team to protect Goldust. He goes for a hot tag to Goldust and Goldust enters laying a fury of moves on Tucker. However Goldust runs out of steam quick and Otis tags himself eventually putting down Goldust to regain the tag titles. After the match, despite their loss, Dream was meaning to give Goldust a present. Goldust opens the present and sees only one of Dream’s boxing gloves. Dream places the other on his right hand and nails him with a sucker punch! Mandy Rose also starts attacking Goldust. Dream holds Goldust in position so Mandy can slap him. “I thought you loved me!” Goldust said. “I used you to gain fame and notoriety. I built you up and you are nothing without me. You have no purpose to me no longer.” as Mandy lays another slap, humiliating Goldust. The Golden Dream is finally dissolved.

The following week, Velvteen Dream and Mandy Rose cut a promo explaining their actions. “My childhood hero let me down and lost our tag champions. He’s no longer the flamboyant icon I used to worship, he’s just a desperate man craving to rekindle the glory days one last time. He was holding The Dream back. But I will humiliate Goldust at the grandest stage of them all... You want a Hollywood ending, then you will sure get one, dream over.”

We get vignette of Goldust back home broken and betrayed, no longer possessing the desire to return to the ring. We hear a knock on the door and a familiar face greets him: it’s his younger brother Cody Rhodes. “Goldust, I know you have had a wild ride the last few months. From being at the top of the mountain as Intercontinental Champion to being stabbed in the back by the ones you trusted. But is this how you want to end your career? By letting the villains win? No, you need to get your act together and show us one more time the magic of Goldust. The Goldust I admired when I watched you as a kid. You deserve the best ending and even if you lose, you will go out with a bang. Do it for all the ones who truly loved Goldust... Do it for Dusty. But most importantly do it for yourself.” Goldust ponders over the words of encouragement and accepts Velveteen’s challenge but on one condition. In a Hollywood Backstage Brawl.” You think you are in charge of writing the script, in charge of writing my epilogue, well I’m afraid you are wrong. Even till the rolling credits, I’m still the director here and this final chapter will be gold.”

Wrestlemania 36: Velveteen Dream vs Goldust for the Intercontinental Championship. In a half an hour epic, Goldust takes Dream to his absolute limit, running him over with his signature gold Cadillac. However Dream hits a Deep Valley Driver through the windshield of the Cadillac. 1..2... Goldust kicks out, further proving his resiliency. He hits a second one that finally puts Goldust done. However Goldust asks Dream to fulfill his final wish: give him a cinematic death. As a sign of respect earned during the match Dream fulfills his wish. Dream drives the car with Goldust inside to a nearby mountain. Dream knocks Goldust unconscious and duct tapes him to the seat. He puts the car in neutral and pushes the Cadillac off a cliff, an explosion is seen as he is given his Hollywood sendoff as Dream retains his Intercontinental Title. Dream has a legendary HOF career, taking up the mantle of the next big flamboyant superstar. Mandy Rose continues an illustrious career of using every single male superstar possible until she eventually turns face and joins Otis.
