Nail lady insults me so she can make more money

I’ll start this off by stating this: I’m not a really girly girl. By that I mean I don’t dabble in the world of makeup and fashion and all that. Partly because I hate how I’m expected to like it, and partly because I don’t feel confident enough to try it all.

The only times I made exceptions to my style choices were prom nights and any formal event I needed to go to. During my senior year of high school I had a massive boost in confidence, and decided to act on it for prom. Part of this involved me going to get my nails, hair, and makeup professionally done.

I decided to get my nails done a couple days before prom instead of waiting till that day. I went to a nail salon that was close to my house with my mom and showed them what I wanted. It was a simple blue and black gradient look with some sparkles to match the subtle ones on my dress. The lady gets to working on my nails and I’m actually having a decent experience. She started to get a bit annoying when she wouldn’t let me pick which sparkles I wanted, saying they wouldn’t look good. Now I’m not a nail professional, but I had been taking art classes my whole school career and knew what would look good on me and what would best match what I wanted. I didn’t want to cause any issues so I let her pick a different sparkle, knowing that it wouldn’t look bad.

As the appointment goes on I get a bit more assertive with what I want because it became clear the lady wasn’t doing what I had asked for. My nails were looking like stripes rather than a gradient. They still looked cute though so I wasn’t causing a scene. She then starts asking me if I want to do anything else while I’m there, which I say no. She kept trying to convince me to do other things and I was starting to become uncomfortable. She started asking be about if I wanted to wax my eyebrows or anything. Now I’ve never cared for my eyebrows. I felt they looked fine and that’s all I needed. This lady kept going on about how bushy they were and all this and I was starting to get upset. Next thing she pointed out was the fuzzy baby hairs I have on my face. Particularly above my lip. Again, I’ve never cared for them. They didn’t bother me, and I felt fine with having them. The next part of the conversation I had with her is burned into my brain:

NL- You don’t want to wax those hairs? It’s not expensive!

Me- “no thanks, I’m not interested and these never bug me.”

NL- “oh you really should though! You’re beautiful, but you look like a man.”

My mother instantly snapped her attention to the lady and said, “Oh shut up!” But laughed afterwards to try and not make a scene for my sake. I was feeling really upset now and wanted out. I almost made us leave before even getting my nails done because this woman had kept on the topic of the hair for so long. I began to get a bit more stern and she ended up dropping the topic. Once she was done we got up, paid, and left without another word to anyone in there. Once we got into the car I realized how shaky I was. I kinda wished my mom had lost it on the lady honestly. I left the nail salon with a nail art that was completely different from what I asked for and the weight of new insecurities about things I never even considered a problem about myself.

I don’t understand how someone in any part of the beauty industry thinks it’s a good sals tactic to berate a customer about something they say no to. It’s been over a year and to this day I’m self conscious about the small fuzz on my face all because this one woman decided to hound me on it for about 10 mins after I had denied the service. I haven’t stepped foot in another nail salon and will never go back in one again.
