I find the Steam Controller extremely helpful for this game, as it has very comfortable grip switches on the underside. By default the right grip is mapped to the X button and that's exactly what I use it for (nail attacks). My thumb is almost always on the A button for jumping. In the beginning I used the X button, but now I don't use it anymore. During the fight against Hornet I suddenly started to use the grip more and more. I had many attempts against Hornet. Only by using the grip I did manage to jump and hit at the same time. So I was able to bounce on Hornet when she was standing still.
I have to say that I'm quite a noob with coordination problems. Better players might be better served with another controller.
But for me, the extra grip button has many advantages. Also especially in combination with the nail arts I find it difficult to hold down the X button and press the A button at the same time. With the Steam Controller this is fortunately not necessary.
I tried to use one of my Dual Shock controllers from the PS4 because it has a very good D-Pad. The D-Pad is really great on the DS controller. But due to the missing grip buttons the DS controller didn't work for me at all with Hollow Knight. Unfortunately, the D-Pad panel of the Steam controller is no substitute for a real D-Pad. So I just use the joystick. I got used to it now.
Altogether the Steam Controller is worth a test for all players I think, because of the grip keys. They are really ingenious. Unfortunately the controller is quite expensive.
