I’ve been thinking of a way to complete hollow knight without having to deal direct nail damage to enemies. Destroying structures is okay, the only way you can obtain soul is from the statues and maybe some charms, no nail arts but all spells and all charms can be used to deal damage.
Unfortunately, there become some roadblocks very early on. You can get to the crossroads without effort, just break down the doors in kp. But then we come across a couple roadblocks, three of which I have in mind.
Initially, you might think that the shaman mound is impossible because of the lack of soul, but you could probably just grind for geo from a vengefly under a stalactite somewhere so that you can buy and earn enough soul fragments for an extra container. However, you wouldn’t be able to use the geo as you need to save sly, which requires killing mama gruz.
Secondly, there’s obviously the false knight. As some of you may know, the door to the left of the area is breakable, but this only becomes breakable on their second phase. Simple as this, there is no way to progress past this boss without dealing damage, UNLESS you count hits that obtain soul as “damage dealing”. Which even still, you can only progress the fight by smacking the maggot inside.
But! This isn’t even where your no nail run stops! Your run is OVER as early as the aspid arena next to the hot springs in the crossroads. As you require to kill 3 aspids with no environmental hazards or ways to deal damage. Unfortunately, there is no way to even get to your first boss without having to deal damage to an enemy with the nail.
This was fun to think about, but then it got me thinking to those video game challenge videos which this may have been inspired from. And as are they, they tend to talk about he minimum requirements if the challenge is impossible, and that’s what I want to discuss. What is the minimum required amount of nail kills in order to kill all the dreamers and the hollow knight itself?
