Nail newbie needs acrylic advice!

I’m new to the world of nails and nail art, and I would love some advice on this dilemma of whether or not to give acrylics another go

1st question: is my experience normal? So last February, I decided to try out a set of acrylics for the first time. I loved them at first. After 2 fills, the acrylic was so thick, it was impossible to pick up small/flat items off of desks and tables (ex: paperclips, pins, credit cards, etc.) Every time I got them filled, somehow the skin under my nails would get “glued” to the nail and the tech would forcibly push the skin from the nail, causing it to bleed and hurt for days. At the time, my temp job ended and I was unemployed for a few months and didn’t have the spare income to keep it up. I went to get them removed. The nail tech soaked my nails in straight acetone, which dried out my cuticles, and used an electric rotating file (not sure the proper name for it) all over my nails until they were brittle beyond repair. Like, you could see the red of my nailbeds brittle.

2nd question: It’s taken 4.5 months for my nails to grow out completely back to their normal, healthy state. Since the acrylics were removed, I have had no choice but to keep my nails as short as possible because they would bend backwards and break off into the quick. I’ve had the ugliest nails of my life for what seems like ages. Part of me wants to give the acrylics a try at a better salon, especially now that I have a full-time job and a little income to spare. That is, unless my first experience is the norm and in that case, acrylics just aren’t for me. Is this a good idea? Every time I look at my fingers, I’m sad! Any input would be appreciated!
