This story is going to be high fantasy and steampunk. Two nation's, one steampunk and the other fantasy eventually wage war on each other. I'm trying to keep the steampunk nation to a quasi-imperial-French motif and am trying to make the names at least vaguely French.
1) Elderly navy veteran (airship captain). Tough as nails and somewhat morally ambiguous when it comes to warfare. He has lung cancer at the beginning of the story and hides it. Dies about halfway through. Serves as mentor to heroine.
2) Pirate captain. Eventually befriends heroine after she captures him. He will serve as an enforcer and advisor against magic users and dragons. Brutal and quick to fight, he hates all governments and refuses to bow to anyone he seems weaker than himself. He's a loose cannon and often has to be kept in check by heroine. She also values him because he keeps her from planning attacks so much she doesn't get anything done.
3) An airship, armored and state of the art. Stolen by the characters above that is used as primary means of conveyance for most of the story. Mirrors embedded in balloon render camouflage in certain weather conditions.
