Tumblr could have been a very good platform it had potential and was at one point the best platform for teens and young adults since Myspace, aim, AOL etc.

I used tumblr close to its peak around 2012-2015 around that time it was a really good teen platform with a healthy community with healthy interactions and friendships being made even long distance relationships, even the artwork on the platform was good no tags filled with furries and that weird Steven universe style artwork it even had a healthy LGBT community.

Facebook was slowly being intoxicated with fake news links, misinformation and old people (i.e parents and grandparents) and Instagram was in its infancy..reddit was just reddit.

Tumblr was different and was a place for teens and young adults to be teens and young adults who didn't quite fit with the Facebook or reddit crowd.

I think tumblrs downfall was when politics and very far left wing toxic ideals began to muck up the community around towards the middle half of 2014 and it only grew as more popular and influential users with bigger follower counts spread the site with misinformation and overall turned the community toxic and against eachother.. it was honestly hard not to get sucked in because it infected every community.

People went as far as doxing those who said something or made art against the dominant ideal making sure others lost their jobs or got threatening phone calls.

The sudden rise in hate towards white men by suburban white girls, 3rd wave white feminism, new sexual identifications and gender identities the fake "woke" movement and toxic fandoms even many toxic movements started on tumblr and leaked out into real life and different platforms.

The right end of the spectrum was bad too there were literal nazi blogs and holocaust deniers and neo nazis on the site and more that further intensified the problem.

Their ban of NSFW content was just the final nail on the hammer
