CUPHEAD: what a wonderful and incredible game that almost made me insane!

Yes I am exaggerating for the sake of my argument! But oh boy this game was hard as hell and wasn't for the lack of warning...I just was to cocky and sure of my skills to pay attention to it! There was even a post here, if you get easily triggered don't buy Cuphead or something close to this and I was: "Yeah right...!".

First let me praise the art style and music, I know the game is not new and many people have done so...but I bow to these Devs, I am sure it wasn't easy but they stood with their vision and their original idea and they were rightfully rewarded.

This game is GORGEOUS to the eyes and hears and when Ive heard that devs had to literally use their houses has "collateral" if the project didn't went well, my respect for them reach the maximum level!

Gameplay is also top notch, there wasn't a single time that I felt the temptation to blame the game or its mechanics (maybe sometimes on the Devil), when I died (and I died a lot!!!) I always blamed my self because the controls were super tight and responsive.

Now about me almost loosing my mind! This game was also a huge dose of humility for me.

I played games all my life, nowadays at 30 years old I am pretty casual gamer! But I used to be super hardcore gamer...I don't to bother you with my gaming life story and I don't want to sound like a guy who is bragging to be a "pro", but in this case I feel its important for context to show where I come from and why I was so cocky! To put it very shortly I was an hardcore raider on World of Warcraft, during close to a decade, competing for server first kills, usually on guilds between top50 EU, for people that played and raided on WoW, you know how demanding this can be. I also played MOBAs semi-professionally during 2 years, not a player you would see on "gaming news" but I have participated in some relatively known tournaments and made some money and got some really nice gaming gear while it lasted!

I also push Diablo 3 leaderboards quite often on PC, would do the same on the Switch if it wasn't full of cheaters (BLIZZARD PLS FIX THIS!!)

Now I know none of the above means that If I was good at said games I am by default good at a game like Cuphead! But I was still cocky! "I am skilled, this how hard can this be? Its gonna be hard but THAT hard? Doubtful..." This is what I said to my brother in law, that was at my place when I bought the game.

I also have played and beat some "tough as nails" games before and they gave me a run for my money BUT I never encountered nothing that made me despair!

I have played and beat Salt and Sanctary, Hollow Knight, Dark Souls (only the 1st one), Ninja Gaiden, among others but nothing gave me as much trouble as Cuphead did!

Cuphead was the 1st game ever that I went to bed with "something to finish"! I am usually pretty stubborn and I often say: I am only going to bed after I beat this boss, level or mission and I never once failed, I came close to it on Hollow Knight, during Watcher Knights but I endured and went to bed at 3:45am on a week day!

Well all that went to shit with Cuphead!

I dunno about to you guys and I would love to hear your take on Cuphead's difficulty but at least for me personally, this game is very hard and very good on "trigger you"...like making you tilt because the fights are very short so in my case the game tricks me to rush an easy phase so I can reach the phase I need to progress on and I end up dying early, becoming even more tilted.

There are 3 bosses that I probably spent more on time on them than on the rest of the game combined:

  • Wally Warbles - fucking bird I hate you so much! It hurts me even more when I went online after I beat the game and see that some people only find him mildly hard, for some not even top 10! Stupid bird and his stupid bird son...
  • The Devil - Jesus that 1st phase...omfg! It almost felt unfair sometimes, running from the serpent form and there his a devil spawning on the safe side. Or the circling flames spawn and you are dodging them and he does the goat move...omg PTS is kicking...I don't feel so good. I honestly think that the 1st time I passed the 1st phase with all 3 lives, I beat the bastard.
  • Grim Matchstick - I am being 100% honest here when I say that I can not think about the fight without getting angry!!! Fuck that Dragon! Remember the title? This was the motherfucker that almost killed my mind!!! I was swearing so much my wife actually took the controller away from me and said "FFS You gonna have a mental meltdown...".

What are your top 3 hardest bosses?

Also I saw with relative surprise 2 bosses being often considered extremely hard: King Dice and The Bee. The 1st one its pain full but I guess it takes more time than skill if that makes sense, once you master like 6 bosses of 9 available and assume you are good on parrying the dice for the number you want, all you need is the perfect board that has the extra heart on the bosses you WANT to fight, most of them are pretty straightforward (drinks, cigar, chips, russian roulette, domino)...after that its just a matter of reaching King Dice himself with some lives left and running from side to side while doing some dmg! The Bee had some many "exploits" to give you an easy time that I felt it was a matter of reaching her last phase with all 3 lives and just hoping for the best! 1st phase is easy, the bee cop runs to a side you run to the other! Simple! 2nd phase every 3 skills have an "exploit", torpedos you just hug a wall, when a torpedo comes your way you don't jump or dodge, you just use smoke bomb against the wall and its done...the 2 parry-able balls, wait for them and then quick go to the opposite side since they move slowly they wont catch up...the triangles, when they are about to spawn you move the furthest way from it and its super easy to dodge the shots. Use the super on transition and then its a matter to survive long enough on last phase to kill it.

Now the Robot, is generally perceived has the hardest boss in the game! It wasn't for me but I can totally understand that!

What are your generally perceived hard bosses that you felt it weren't a big deal?

I beat Cuphead yesterday and today was the 11th since I bought it, so before work I grabbed my Switch in the morning to check how many hours it took me to beat it!

30 Hours my Switch says...then while drinking my coffee I checked Howlongtobeat.com to see what was the average time to complete it and my heart sunk and my pride and confidence as a gamer were crushed: about 10 hours!!!

Ofc that I am exaggerating again...but 3x times the normal amount? Am I that bad at run and gun games? Do I suck that much!?

How much it time it took you on your 1st play-trough?

I then saw an article online, I think it was concerning only the xbox player base that only 9% of the people who bought the game actually finished it...and that gives me a little solace, assuming its true! But I am still hurt xD

Thank you Cuphead Devs, I both love you and hate you. Thanks for the laughs, the screams, an wonderful time and frustrating time...this game enters directly to my TOP 10 games of all time and since I am at it, thanks for the humility bath I guess...
