Dokkan Battle's Global version launched on July 16th, 2015. Here's a little writeup on what it was like. I'll probably do more of these at some point.
There were approximately 4 SSRs in the game. AGL SSJ Goku, STRoku, TEQgeta, and PHYgeta. I'm pretty sure AGL Goku and TEQ Vegeta were featured on the very first banner, but STRoku and PHYgeta were not. TEQ Vegeta was seemingly the most popular SSR leader to be seen.
TEQ Vegeta - With a leader skill of [TEQ, INT & STR ATK +30%] and a passive of [Ki+2 and ATK +2000 when HP is 30% of below], he was generally considered the best card in the game at the time.
PHY Vegeta - LS: [AGL, INT & PHY ATK +30%] P: [Attacked enemy's ATK -25%]
AGL Goku - LS: [AGL, INT & PHY ATK +30%] P: [Ki +5 when HP is 30% or lower]
STR Goku - LS: [TEQ, INT & STR ATK +30%] P: [ATK +50% when Ki is 5 or more]. The case could be made that STR Goku was better than TEQ Vegeta, but as he wasn't featured, he was rarely if ever seen.
The SSR rates were very low at this time, I believe as low as 2% or less. Also, yes, this means there wasn't a single INT SSR in the game.
SR Vegeta was the first Strike Event in the game, and also the first farmable SR. However, since his drop rates were pretty low unless you were playing on Z-Hard, and not a lot of players were all that great at the game or had a full team of awakened SRs or something, Z-Hard was pretty difficult and not many players were able to even get one of him before his event rotated for the first time. Still, he was a good card, great even, and was coveted by those who were able to get him.
R GOKU EVENT
In these times, only 1 R Goku could ever be obtained. He was on a lot of teams though, since he was free.
R GOHAN EVENT
The first ever story event was the Raditz story event. The only real reward from this event was R Kid Gohan. Anyone who was around at the beginning will know that R Kid Gohan was probably one of your go-to cards and could put in some serious work. Not only could he be farmed (and his drop rate wasn't the worst in the world), his super attack lowered defense and his passive had a chance to raise all allies ATK by 25%. A Z-Awakened SA10 Kid Gohan was pretty powerful for its time.
LOGIN BONUS
During the opening celebration, players were given 1 DS every day.
STR FIRST FORM FRIEZA
Word quickly got out that STR First Form Frieza was a card worth rerolling your account for. He could be pulled as your first card and had a good leader skill, [ATK +15% for all types]. His super attack lowered attack, and his passive boosted his ATK by +1500. All in all, he was a damn good card for the time.
MEDAL GRINDING EVENTS/KORIN
These events changed daily and were pretty much the only way to get the medals needed to Z-Awaken your cards. These events later got much better in terms of drop rates. Elder Kai and Supreme Kai were so rare that it would have been EXTREMELY rare to see an awakened SSR in the first week of the game. The Medal events were one every weekday and the first stage of Korin's Tower was on weekends. Korin seems a lot less useful to me, even at the time, but it is what it is.
CONFUSION
Many players were confused to begin with when playing Dokkan Battle. The mechanics behind summoning were unknown. Players would experiment with holding the Kamehameha for longer, 'charging up', or releasing it and charging up again, etc, trying in vain to increase the rates. It was generally accepted that getting SSJ Goku in your summon meant you were going to get an SR or better. There were also methods like doing a FP summon before doing a DS summon for better luck (thanks u/PrvyJutsu), doing a Single before doing a Multi for better luck, never doing Multis, etc. At this point there wasn't any benefit to Multi Summoning besides pulling 10 times in one burst.
WHAT IT WAS LIKE
-The summon mechanics were different, not only was it the old style, there weren't even the comets, no Satan flying in, etc. Only thing was regular Goku to start or SSJ Goku to start and SSJ Goku meant SR or higher. I'm not entirely certain but I think it was possible for him to go SSJ upon going into the Kamehameha, which is possibly how the 'charging up' strats mentioned above came about (trying to get SSJ to trigger).
-There was no Dokkan Awakening of any kind
-There was no Hidden Potential system of any kind
-I'm pretty sure you couldn't raise the SA of a card by feeding it cards of the same name, only the exact same card
-There was no Baba Shop
-There weren't any Satan Statues
-The UI was very different (see links)
-Training items had to be put in 1 at a time, you could use 5 training items maximum every time
-I'm not entirely sure when this banner was live, perhaps within the first day of launch. By the second day it was definitely onto the other banner linked. u/SuperVegitoFAN thinks (and I agree) that it was most likely used when the game was pre-release/in beta.
META/THE BEST TEAM:
As you can tell from the LS of the SSRs, the best LS template was [(3 different types) ATK +30%]. I'd personally say that SR Vegeta's +3 Ki for AGL would be most useful since it could help guarantee Super Attacks, but players at the time weren't accustomed to using SAs on every character every turn and ATK bonuses were considered more important if you weren't going to SA anyway. Items still existed, of course, and these could be used (particularly orb changers) to ensure SA. HP counts were so low that the energy drinks were used a lot. Not many players had all 4 item slots at the time since people weren't 100% sure how to get Shenron and what the purpose of Quest was. I don't exactly remember how many Quest levels existed, but I'm pretty sure it originally ended at World 9 with the battles against SSJ Vegeta.
Anyway, here's my mockup of what 'the best possible teams' could have been back in those times.
AGL Vegeta-based:
AGL Vegeta (leader & friend), AGL SSJ Goku, SR Stern Teacher Piccolo, SR Secret Arts Unleashed Yamcha, SR Martial Guidance Master Roshi, SR Determined Defender Goku SR INT Call of Duty Nail
You could substitute any of the SRs for any others if you want, I just picked the best 4 AGL SRs at the time. This team has some light Ki support with some of the SRs and would have a fighting chance at pulling off SAs thanks to the +6ki from Vegeta and orb-changing items and the like.
STR Goku-based:
STR SSJ Goku (leader & friend), SSR TEQ SSJ Vegeta, SR TEQ Kid Gohan, SR STR First Form Frieza, SR AGL Vegeta, SR INT The Gifted One Chiaotzu SR INT Hidden Strength Zarbon
This team's LS benefits TEQ, INT and STR type cards, and as STR Goku and TEQ Vegeta were the heaviest hitters, this feels like the best one to go with. This also benefits Kid Gohan and First Form Frieza. Chaiotzu also benefits. He's here mostly in a support role since he can stun enemies. Strike Vegeta doesn't benefit from the LS, but he would still do a lot of damage with a higher SA. I think this is probably the best possible team from launch.
Both teams have been edited to go along with what u/FabiCut says about the meta of early Dokkan:
u/FabiCut: "A huge part of the meta was cards with the metamorphosis or the namekian link. Those were bugged at dokkans early time so that you could activate it 3 times per turn, which meant 15 % healing. So str frieza + any zarbon card or piccolo +nail were really good combos"
This just covers the very first few days of Dokkan Battle's launch. If you have any corrections for me, please feel free to leave a comment below and let me know. If you want to see more, also let me know!
