So the awesome 07th network on twitter (and a couple others) are liveblogging the Ryukishi panel. Pictures were apparently allowed, but no recording, so there's no video of the event. There are a couple who have said they'll upload pics later. The Q&A started immediately after he announced the simultaneous released for Ciconia.
Also Mangagamer gave a pretty big infodump here right after the panel. A lot of it is what was covered below, with the exception of the summary:
In Ciconia When They Cry, World War 3 has come and gone, with nuclear winter only narrowly avoided by new military technology, the Gauntlet, which allows those wielding one to fly like fighter jets, fight like battleships, and repel attacks like tanks without any additional equipment. The Gauntlets require particular talent and special training administered from a young age in order to control, and the young boys and girls capable of mastering of them become known as Gauntlet Knights. The main characters of Ciconia When They will be a group of these young Gauntlet Knights who, after the peaceful competition in the International Battle Standard Festival, become fast friends vowing to prevent world war together. However, world events are leading directly to World War 4 like a cascading row of dominos, and these “main characters” are nothing but pawns in the global games played by those with a right to sit at the table. Will these youth be forced to murder each other? Can the tragedy of war be prevented by mere pawns? Who are the real players in these games, and will you, the fans of When They Cry, fight for your seat at this deadly game?
Panel stuff:
- Simultaneous JP/EN Ciconia release during Comiket both physical and on Steam (probably August 9, the day Summer Comiket starts). Witch-hunt was approached about 2 years ago regarding a day 1 translation for the next WTC.
- He begins talking about Sangeki Sandbox (he is the writer, AIR KANON illustrator does the sprites), and gives character design previews for the MCs and a bit of info. Apparently it's not even announced in Japan yet. The script is done, VA work has started, and it's "for fans of girls brutalizing pure boys". It will release on Switch.
- Sangeki Sandbox has "a bunch of girls going about each other" (not sure what exactly this means, clarification appreciated)
- He showed a Ciconia PV. Somebody nabbed pics and will upload them later. I believe the Q&A starts after this.
- Same feeling as Higurashi and Umineko in a different setting
- Evangelion was an inspiration for Ciconia. According to him, it's a mystery, and a lot of people are going to die. This game will be a little different than Umineko and Higurashi. I like to think of it like Evangelion, since there's a lot of mysteries you don’t necessarily solve. You can enjoy the story or the mystery.
- "Those people" from Higurashi and Umineko will show up and cause a ruckus
- Witch Hunt is having some fun on twitter.
- While it is not connected to Ciconia, Haworthia is still the basis for Ciconia
- Telling the Dai story: he went to a couple music composing circles asking for music for Higurashi since he was bad at music. They all said no because his art was bad. (objectively false, anybody who says mittens are ugly is a coward). Eventually as Higurashi was released, he and his brother used royalty-free music, and did the volume adjustments themselves. It sucked. Dai reached out to them and said "do you guys need help with this? Because it seems you really need help". After Higurashi got popular, more composers started reaching out to him.
- When he went to Shirakawago a couple years ago, he apologized for killing so many of its residents in Higurashi
- Apparently when he was writing Higurashi he got a 3 line email from a circle that said ""Higurashi is really good/But the music sounds like nails on a chalkboard/Please let me make the music".
- Whenever porting the games comes up there's always an issue of rights (I'm assuming this is in reference to the music).
- During Umineko development, he looked up a lot of responses online, and scrapped a couple things based on that (like the fabled Land of the Golden Witch)
- Umineko
- Umineko
- He had a lot of fun writing Lion and Will because they're fun characters. His favorite scene is Lion pinching Will's butt (and then says he likes to be pinched that way too......thanks for sharing???????)
EDIT: adding info. If anybody's at the panel and can clarify any statements or has anything else to add, give me a heads up!
EDIT 2: c'mon automod-chan, there was one question mark in that post.
EDIT 3: panel wrapped up, though he does have autographs later.
EDIT 4: Aaaaaand infodump from Mangagamer here.
