[HIRING] Graphic designer/illustrator to create dragon logo

Hi there,

We're working on a startup in the gaming industry and our mascot has been designated as a fire breathing dragon. Ultimately, we're really looking for someone to create our "mascot". We want a dragon that says "this is us" and can be easily reused or recreated for other logos or images. For example, if you look at Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, he personifies the entire series. That's exactly what we're looking for: our dragon.

Requirements for the design:

  1. The logo must scale well. That is, it can look excellent and be recognizable in large formats (such as a PC wallpaper) as well as very small formats (such as favicons).
  2. The logo must be able to be used on many backgrounds. That is, we can easily change the logo color or the background color with no issues (this typically eliminates any hand-drawn logos or logos with shading (although we would highly appreciate someone with drawing/artistic skills since we can imagine this might require quite a few concepts to nail what we're looking for).

Focal features of importance:

  1. The wings would be a big player here. We don't need anything intricate, but appreciate the "batman" style wings.
  2. We're looking for a full body dragon. We don't want a "mascot-style" logo - we want a full body dragon that will act as our mascot, will define our image, and can be used or transformed into other logos as well.
  3. We don't want a fierce dragon. We're not looking for something that screams "horror". But at the same time, we don't want something that screams "cute". We want an aesthetically pleasing dragon that meets our above requirements while also defining us. I can provide images of dragons that do/don't work as examples.
  4. This isn't necessary, but we have some sample logos (of dragons) that use negative space for the fire. Unfortunately these particular logos don't look that great in small form, but we feel we might be able to work with someone to create something similar but completely unique that would work for us.

What we are having trouble deciding on:

  1. The orientation of the dragon; there are many logos out there with a dragon flying up, down, diagonally, etc. We have no idea what we want here and would leave this up to a designer to determine what looks best based on the requirements we specified above.
  2. Our preference on a logo would be either modern, minimalistic, or a combination of the two, but we definitely do not like the "clip-art" feel. We all seem to have different tendencies but if you wanted to have a call to discuss, we would be more than happy to do so.
  3. A dragon in and of itself would be a difficult logo to use in large and small formats (which is our #1 requirement). We're wondering if a designer can't do this, if they would be able to make a secondary logo for "small formats" that still accurately displays our brand.
  4. We're not sure whether to include fire in the logo or not. We originally liked this idea when we saw fire used as the negative space in the logo, but aren't sure whether it's practical. Again, I can show images as examples where we do/don't like the use of it.

I can say with a high level of certainty that this job will require numerous concepts. We have a small team that will be voting on the design but we're all (mostly me) extremely picky. This is important to us since we plan to use this logo to define our entire image moving forward, so we'd really like to ensure we get it right. As a result, we've set a budget at $500+. A comprehensive portfolio and references would be required from all applications submitting for this job. Future jobs are also likely to stem from this if interested, especially if you're able to draw. We would like to include cartoon-style drawings on our upcoming website for certain pages (such as 404, etc), though that's not a requirement for this particular job.

If interested, feel free to message me here and I can provide samples and we can discuss more about any thoughts or concerns you may have. For more immediate response, please add me on Discord (xyeLz#1343) and I will get back to you later tonight or typically within 1-2 hours. The deadline for applications is 3/31.

Thank you!
