Help for First gel nails

I‘ve eben into nail art for a few years and it‘s been really fun so far :) but up to now I just used normal colors. I want to start doing uv gels. Mostly for the longer durability and shine.

I‘ve read some tutorials and all used fake nails. Is this a must? I would prefer to stay with my natural nails. I like them short anyway.
