Finally beat Trial of the Fool! Here's what worked for me.

If you are anything like me, you had (or are having) loads of trouble getting through the Trial of the Fool. Particularly, the floor-is-spikes part. Like many others I've spent lots of time and many charm combos trying to get through it. I ended up having all the waves leading up to it memorized, with my own particular ways I liked to do it. I read guides and watched videos. And still I couldn't manage to get through the no floors part without running into enemies so much that I died. Here's how I finally did it:

  • this guide was great for the wave-by-wave breakdown of what spawns where. It also gave me the idea for using Hiveblood. I tried the rest of the charm loadout given there, but it still didn't work for me. More on that shortly. While using Hiveblood you can save on soul / save from healing by hiding out up on the walls, if there are no winged enemies, or dodging around as possible.
  • As others have recommended, leave a Shielded Fool alive when possible to fill up on masks and soul using the dream nail. You can also do this with the pink blobs (mistakes?) that spawn from the floor with the first Soul Twisters.
  • Terrible at using nail arts while hopping around and dashing? Me too. I tried what many recommended and did nailmaster's glory and tried to adjust to using great slash to take care of enemies when there was no floor. But I eventually gave up on that strategy in favor of making use of the increased size (and damage) of Shade Soul when using Shaman Stone.
  • I noticed that longnail and mark of pride did nothing to increase my nail's range when hanging on to a wall. As that was the part I needed help with, I decided to nix them from my build altogether.
  • My final charm loadout was: Shaman Stone, Hiveblood, Grubsong, Thorns of Agony, and Soul Catcher. Even though this is mostly a spell loadout, I relied primarily on nail damage, saving my soul for certain enemies (primal aspids, mantis petras, soul twisters) or waves (the platforms in a column part and no-floor part), and heals. Soul Catcher and Grubsong helped me have plenty of soul even though I tend to get hit a lot. Thorns helped to take care of spots where I was getting hit a lot, both by helping with damage and pushing enemies back.
  • Sometimes it can be advantageous to heal even if you are going to get hit right after. As long as there's a moment between the heal and the hit (if it's too soon, hiveblood wont replenish it), and you can dodge around long enough to regen that mask, then it will heal it. Plus, sometimes thorns will take care of the offending enemy.
  • With grubsong and hiveblood together, you can actually replenish your soul slowly by letting yourself get hit once and retreating to an upper corner to let the mask heal (when there's no winged enemies). Combined with the last tip you can use the Brooding Mawlek that is before the no-floor part to get up to full or near full health and soul before you are floorless. This strategy is a little tedious and can be tricky to extract yourself without getting hit again sometimes. Dream nail the first and second wave of descending garpedes to fill up any additional soul you need.
  • If the part that keeps getting you is the chaos with the Battle Obbles, use the wave earlier where there's Obbles and platforms to practice pogo-ing on them. Also I found it help to not panic, because I ended up jumping or dashing into their spit-balls. When I slowed down I realized I could jump or slide against the wall to move out of the way carefully most of the time, and use the time between their attacks to try to land a hit or position myself for a spell.

I hope this is helpful, and feel free to ask for help if you're still struggling with this trial! And take heart to know that for most of us, it takes a tons of practice to pull it off.
