Any ideas for building a big square of barren wasteland on a studio floor?

I'm doing an ultra-low budget music video passion project with some friends, and we're shooting mostly on green screen (I have a background in VFX).

We need to create a 12-15' square of ground on the floor that looks like generic dirt or stone, or any kind of barren natural wasteland. It has to be able to handle a dancer moving around on it. We can nail into the wooden floor of the studio, but otherwise can’t really do anything to the existing floor.

Any ideas or suggestions for a way to do this cheaply and ourselves (aka, random crew, not art dept wizards) would be so deeply appreciated :)
