Sometimes I'll see on YouTube or wherever a really pretty eyeshadow palette. It has a great color story of some sort. I'm especially a sucker for blues, purples, and hot pinks. Or I'll see an eyeshadow single or nail polish in a very unique color.
I've narrowed down my makeup collection to where I have 5 eyeshadow palettes (3 neutral, one jewel toned one, and one in mauve pinks) and about 20 nail polishes (blues, purples, blacks, nudes, and dark reds.)
I started being honest with myself and I know I just won't use that hot pink or teal color eyeshadow. Or that I like the color story but I won't use every color in the palette. This made me realize that I will probably prefer the color not in my makeup, but I would love to wear it as nail polish or a piece of clothing. I'll look like Barbie wearing hot pink eyeshadow or lipstick, but some nail polish or as a blouse would be perfect.
Then I look at my collection of nail polish and clothing and I know I have enough items in those categories. I'm at a great place with how much I own of those things. I decluttered them the same time I decluttered my makeup.
So basically I think myself through the process of "what do I want with these pretty colors?" I won't use it as makeup. And I don't feel like hunting down or spending the money on clothes. Maybe I could use that color story in an art project. By the time I get to the end of this thought process... I'm over it and I don't want to buy anything. Works every time.
