Year in Review: My HGs and Fuck ups of 2018

I've slowly started coming back to r/makeupaddiction after finally making the transition from student to gainfully employed adult. One thing I've noticed since I've been back to lurking is that the sub seems to be lacking product reviews (beyond the obvious one BILLION YouTuber-related things). As I sat down to take stock of 2018 in terms of beauty and skincare purchases, I decided to organize my notes into a mega post here in the hopes that it may help someone looking for product reviews (like I was not too long ago)--and I won't totally lose this shit.

Before get into the actual products, I'll make brief mention of the Sephulta Wars. I currently do all my beauty/skincare/haircare shopping at Sephora, Ulta, Bluemercury, and Nordstrom. This past year was the first year that I hit Rouge at Sephora and Platinum at Ulta. Overall, I think Rouge is a massive letdown. For me, what should be the biggest enticement (exchange 2,500 points--equal to roughly $1,667 USD--for a $100 gift card) is too much of a hassle. I'd rather shift that money to Ulta where I can constantly accrue 'money off' points on a wider range of products (foundation, shampoo, bubble bath, nail polish). IMHO, Sephora is trying way too hard to be something it isn't, while half-assing everything in the process. It wants to offer a loyalty program to appeal to Ulta shoppers while also offering higher end products to appeal to those who shop at places like Bluemercury, Nordstrom, Neimans, etc.

First, the fuck ups

  • MUFE Ultra HD Soft Light Liquid in 20 - pink pearl: I wanted to love this after seeing this Wayne Goss video, but it broke me out like crazy after I mixed it in with my foundation. I've never considered myself to have sensitive skin, so I was really curious to find out what exactly caused my face to freak the fuck out. I tried finding the product's ingredients on the MUFE website, but no such luck. Returned.
  • Blinc Mascara in Black: After falling in love with Kevyn Aucoin's The Volume Mascara, I reached for Blinc's classic tubing mascara when my local Sephora was out of the KA. The Blinc Mascara never really seemed to dry on my lashes and left me with transfer on both my under eyes and my eyelids. Also returned.
  • Ouai Wave Spray: Smelled incredible, left my hair feeling crunchy and sticky. Gave to a friend.
  • MUFE Star Lit Powder in 15 - Golden Pink: MUFE, I really, really want to love you and your pink glitter things. Please stop making this so difficult. Your packaging was fucking bizarre. I will totally accept some operator error here, but I just cannot go to the office looking like I've been railing loose pigment.
  • Tarte Tartiest Creamy Matte Liquid Lip in Bae (which is fucking red): This may have been the worst of the worst. I wanted to have a Taylor moment, a nice red lip, and you ruined that for me, Tarte. I wore this to an event frequented by the over-60 set, at which I snacked on M&M's and prosecco. As I withdrew my hand from my mouth after depositing the M&M's, I deduced that I was either bleeding profusely from my oral cavity or, as was the case, my stupid Tarte liquid lip (never lippie) had failed me despite my exfoliating, carefully lining my lips, patting setting powder onto them, and performing no less than three rain dances before leaving the house. At that point, the damage was done. I was going to finish my M&M's and survey the damage after. And boy was there damage. I went to the ladies' room to look in the mirror and discovered that I looked like I had been vigorously mouth fucked by someone who absolutely HATES red lipstick but LOVES red blush. What had I done; what did you do, Tarte?

Now, the HGs

  • Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre in 20 - Clair (setting powder): I've tried a lot of the classic setting powders, but never quite liked them. Laura Mercier always looks cakey on me. The newish Becca Hydra Cooling one gives me an unflattering yellow cast. I refuse to use Hourglass's Veil Translucent powder until they fix their fucking packaging. This Chanel setting powder is super light, but still gives me a demi-matte finish. It seems much more finely milled than any of the aforementioned powders, and it makes my skin look as though I'm not wearing any powder at all.
  • Tom Ford Eye Quad in Golden Mink: This has the best pink glitter ever and blends like a dream. The eyeshadows are creamy and very pigmented. The glitters (pink and gold) are so fine that I personally feel very comfortable wearing them in a conservative office environment.
  • Drunk Elephant Pekee Bar: This has the most luxurious, but clean (?) lather and my skin feels so refreshed after I wash my face with this bar. I was really skeptical of using a soap bar over a jelly or foaming cleanser, but this is hands down better than any of the other cleansers I have tried, including Drunk Elephant's Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser (which is still pretty good, but the Pekee Bar is more affordable, works better for me, and lasts longer).
  • Laniege Water Bank Essence: Smells so good. I use it morning and night after my toner and before my oil. I feel that it really helps soothe my skin and keeps it hydrated during these winter months.
  • Mason Pearson Detangler (hairbrush): No more fighting with my hair. I never thought a hairbrush could really make that much of a difference, but I stand corrected.

2018 was, by far, my best year yet for makeup, skincare, and haircare. I'm looking forward to getting more into nail art, birthday Botox, and maybe trying something more adventurous with my hair in 2019.
