What is this sub-reddit for?

Largely I started this sub-reddit as a joke and a way of claiming pride after being called a cheap bastard for saving a paper plate to be re-used later.

Getting a little personal, I was raised in a poor household by hoarders. It gave me a conservationist streak, many treasures that were thrown away by others, and a DIY nature.

Being cheap or frugal is often looked down upon but its benefits outweigh the stigma for both personal and world-wide reasons. By finding deals, reusing materials, and making our own stuff we can find a sense of pride.

If you would like to post to this sub-reddit the types of posts I am looking for are:

  1. Trash treasures: Your personal stories about the best things you've gotten for free from the trash. I've got a giant stainless steel sliding board that a local school allowed me to take. They were replacing all of the school equipment with new stuff made of mostly plastic. Kept the painful to fall on wood-chip bedding but made all of the wood and steel equipment into plastic.

  2. Recycling projects: Using old materials to make something new. I'm currently working on a soda(pop) tab chainmail. Neat projects that aren't necessarily practical or might require additional skills.

  1. DIY: Slightly different from recycling projects because making something DIY can be a mix of store bought materials and re-used. DIY is created for practical purposes by the average person. DIY projects can also go beyond making one item. Those neat "river" tables people are making would count. So would a table made from scrap wood. Installing a pellet stove would also be DIY. Because there are already sub-reddits for DIY projects we would focus on cost saving and practical creation and application. So a scrap wood table would be a "better" post for this sub-reddit because most people can't cut class or do fancy epoxy art for a river table but they could probably saw wood and nail it together in a specific pattern for a cheap table.

  1. Jerry-rigged: Ever apply duct tape to a hole rather than properly sealing it? Ever used a cardboard tube instead of a plastic or metal one? Ever used a store grocery bag to wrap your sandwich in? Ever seen five people on one motorcycle? Did you make breakfast by using an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine? How about that guy with the mattress hanging out the back of their tiny car with it held on by string, bungee cords, tape, and/or hands? Sometimes putting a piece of tape really does help fix the problem, at least for a little bit, ask the guys on the space station... If you've got a story about repairing an existing item through unexpected material or homemade Rube Goldberg machines this is that category.
