I think you guys could use a feel-good story considering how crazy the holidays have been.
So let me start off by saying that I'm a bisexual man in a straight relationship and I come off rather flamboyant: higher voice, I wear basic makeup everyday (mostly to hide my rosacea), and I'm well known in the store for my nail art that I do myself.
Today, a lady (who we shall call Nice Lady (NL)) came to the pickup window who I've seen only on a few instances; her husband is usually the one that I see and he's a very nice man. The weird thing about her too is that I've actually ran into her several times at a large psychiatric building in a completely different town, and we'd say hellos and be on our way.
Anyways, I rang her up for her prescriptions and a bunch of Christmas stuff. She looks behind to see if there's anyone else in line and it's all clear.
NL: Hey... can I ask you a question?
Me: Sure?
NL: leans in closer Are you LGBT?
Me: prepares self for a very awkward or insulting conversation uhhh... yes....
NL: Okay. I didn't want to impose, but I have another question for you. Do you have a family to go to for the holidays?
It took me a second to process what she was saying and I just kinda stared dumbly at her for a bit.
Me: Yeah I do, I see my family for pretty much every holiday.
NL: Oh wonderful! I just wanted to make sure. You're always so nice and my husband and I were concerned that you might be in a situation that you might not have a place to go to for Christmas. If that was the case we wanted to invite you and your partner, if you have one, to our home since it's across the street.
To be honest I was pretty surprised by the offer and didn't quite know what to say. As it turns out, all three of her children are LGBT (one trans, one gay, one bisexual ) and two of them had partners where their parents had flat-out disowned them for their sexuality or gender identity. On the same token, my girlfriend is a trans woman whose parents recently just cut ties with her over it and it's been rough for her to deal with.
Having this customer offer something like this was extremely heart-warming to be honest. As much as this job can really wear me down, it's nice to know that there are really, really good people in the world and this whole interaction made me smile all day.
