Hi folks. Total newb here, know nothing about art conservation, don't work in a museum. I need some help with a long commissioning pennant. It's from the mid 1970's, US Navy issue, made of some sort of nylon, I think. It's somewhere between 35 and 40 feet long. It's about 8 inches wide at the heading, and then tapers in the standard fashion down to a swallow tail that takes up the last 4.5 feet. It flew from the USS Constitution in Boston when my father was the skipper during the Bicentennial. So minor historical value but huge sentimental value.
I'd like to display it in my home office. My thought is to suspend it vertically with the top edge at the top of the wall, starting in one corner and proceeding around the room until the entire pennant is hung. Any ideas about the best way to accomplish that to minimize damage to the item? I thought about using small binder clips at intervals, hung on nail or tacks, but how to treat the swallow tail?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Other sources on the Internet talked about stitching Velcro onto it, etc., and I'd like to avoid putting any holes in it if I can. Thanks in advance.
