I just received the newest edition of the Mystic Mondays deck through Amazon, and being the full moon yesterday I thought it would be the perfect time to do a deck interview! (I'm using a spread found through this post)
1) What is your nature? 2 of Wands, Reversed
- This deck is going to help reign in my idealistic tendencies to better focus and remind myself to listen to my inner voice to guide me to my inspiration. I tend to have large ideas that I have difficulty breaking down into smaller, accessible goals, and second guess my work.
2) What are your strengths? Ace of Wands, Reversed
- This deck isn't going to sway me in one way or another, but let me explore different paths and ideas, and teach me patience to better clarify my goals.
3) What do you like doing best? Princess of Swords
- This deck wants to get into the "why" of things, and urge people into action with their goals. Ultimately, there's a thirst for knowledge and finding answers.
4) What are your weaknesses? 10 of Swords
- This deck is not great at bearing bad news, and will spring it seemingly out of no where (after I did this deck interview spread I did a couple full moon readings for friends, and there was one reading in particular that was particularly negative which caught us off guard, so this is very fitting); I take this as just a reminder that even if it's giving bad news, to not wallow in the bad and to find positive ways to work in the negative situations.
5) What do you not like doing? 9 of Swords
- This deck doesn't like causing doubt or "what ifs", so to me this just says that it doesn't like being worked with in states of anxiety or unease. I had a flare up of it right before doing this reading, so very good to know moving forward ;)
6) How do you feel about me? 8 of Pentacles
- This deck sees me as a craftsman, someone who is dedicated to doing the best job possible in whatever they should so choose to do, and who has a level of commitment and focus that are tested in those practices. I am always bouncing around from different ideal career paths, artistic expressions, etc., so this hit the nail on the head for me.
7) What do you think I need to learn? 7 of Pentacles
- I need to learn more patience and to better invest in the long term. "Timing is everything" is a phrase I find pops up quite a bit in my life, and this card certainly speaks that to me, not to mention my partner and I are currently working more on our plans for the future, so working with this deck will help to work on setting realistic goals.
8) How can I work to achieve that? Queen of Cups
- I couldn't help but chuckle to myself when this card ended up in this position, as I had someone do a one card read for me in the morning before I did this reading pull this very card and gave the following description (thanks u/rosegreydawn!): "right now is a time for meditation and clarity in your life. Be clear what you want, and you will attract it to you." I cannot interpret this card in this setting better than that!!
9) Where do you see us going together? Hermit
- We are going to be doing a LOT of soul searching, and finding alignment within myself. Over the last 6 months I have been finding myself more and more drawn back into my spiritual practices after years of suppressing those needs, and have found it to be a fairly singular practice. I pre-ordered this deck with the intention of furthering my practice, and that appears to be very much what we will be doing!
Now, onto the deck itself! I had read some mixed reviews about this deck, but decided to take the plunge with it because I was very much drawn to the art style (I'm a multimedia artist and do some graphic design, so it was a no brainer) coupled with my moth-like tendencies towards anything shiny and bright. I love that the holo effect is all over the box, but I had been anticipating the back logo pattern on the cards to have this same holo finish and it is only colored; don't know if this is from past editions I had seen, or I was mislead by the one picture in the product images that had the back of the cards displayed.
These cards are STURDY. Like, I jokingly thought I would try to riffle shuffle them, and couldn't put so much as a tiny curve into the two stacks of cards, they almost feel plastic. Very shiny, very slick, I've already noticed it picking up dust and fingerprints.
I had anticipated the holo edging shedding a little bit, as that was a critique I had read about previous self-published editions, so I was prepared for the worst, hoping for the best with this Chronicle Books edition. I'm happy to say that though there was a tiny bit of holo glitter that ended up on my hands after first opening the package and handling the cards the first time, I have not had any other issues with the edges shedding (thus far.) I may update this portion of the review as I work more with the deck and see the wear on it, but ultimately I am very happy with this deck!!
I will try to get around to uploading some other pictures of the deck to link into the review a little later <3
