Little Dark Age, MGMT came back with what I think is their best since Congratulations. I love the band to death and this approach to gloomy cynical and tongue in cheek synthpop has made it probably my album of the year.
Dance on the Blacktop by Nothing. A mix of shoegaze with emo and some hard rock, Nothing was a band I didn’t know but stubled across this album. It’s a phenomenal visceral and constantly thrilling album that I think more people should know of, even if you’re not a fan of the genre (reminds me of American Football)
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino by Arctic Monkeys. Love the monkeys, hated AM. This reinvention was one that I was doubtful Alex could pull, but he did elegantly. Up there with Humbug and FWN
Sex and Food by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, they continue being one of the most exciting psych rock bands of our generations, and this gloomy disco feel they threw makes this album a great standout.
Now Only by Mount Eerie, listen to a Crow Looked At Me (2017), and this is basically a sequel. It’s an indie folk art rock album that is gut wrenching, poeting, and devoid of cliches. Mount Eerie is one of the best projects you’ve never heard of.
Twin Fantasy by Car Seat Headrest, a re-recording of their 2011 Bandcamp “masterpiece” helped them achieve production textures that make each and every single one of the songs improve by a fucking lot. Fantastic album, love love love it.
Trench by Twenty One Pilots has been playing this week. I disliked their early work severely, and thought Blurryface had some promise until eventually I disliked it a lot too. But this more mature, less suburbianized melodrama filled, and ambitious record makes Trench to be quite a great surprised, has some moments of just truly great pop music.
Other mentions include Nine Inch Nails’ Bad Witch, Solitude by Kali Uchis.
Vampire Weekend 4 was also confirmed to definitely be coming out before summer 2024
