How do you define Hauntology?

I'll be the first to say I've really only dipped my toes into this genre; I got into it from the more folksy angle (year in the country and all that), and really enjoyed some stuff like Hereford Wakes, belbury poly, and a lot of Broadcast.

However, I realized recently that I don't really have a firm grasp of what hauntology actually is, and I haven't been able to find anything too helpful online. The best way I've heard of describing it is "imagined futures based on half-remembered pasts" but that doesn't feel complete.

Essentially I'm just wondering what your go to way of explaining hauntology is. I'd also appreciate if you had any recommendations for theory I could read, blogs I could visit, or podcasts/music I should listen to.
