As a skeptic, I only bought hollow knight on sale. Now I love it. Here’s why in non-Metroidvania terms and some switch reasons so you can decide for yourself

I’m an adult and have a kid. I am starting to hav to choose my games wisely. I neither have the time or money to go after every one. Hollow knight intrigued me only because it was getting so much praise.

I researched why people loved it and a lot of what I found was, “if you like the Metroidvania genre then you’ll like this. If you don’t it may convince you.” I would look up metroidvania stuff and I though meh. Not really a draw for me.

Then it was on sale and I’m addicted to buying cheap games (thank you steam) and I learned to live the game. Here are my reasons for why. Also I may say things that sound metroidvania to those who’ve played it

  1. Precision and craft. So there are some amazing games that are insanely complex and wonderful but you find yourself saying wow. They really didn’t nail down this one part. Like the Witcher series or Skyrim with fighting. Hollow knight is precise and almost perfect. They made a decision (a fairly simple one) and nailed it down perfectly. The fighting and upgrades are easy to comprehend once you learn it and while hard to master, once you do you really fly.

  2. Story. The story is a bit sparse but it’s actually enthralling. It’s spread out in delicious little bread crumbs. The world building is fascinating. I wasn’t expecting it though I’d read about it.

  3. Exploration. I loved BOTW for how it rewarded exploration. This game has done that for me as well. Your mind will recognize impossible to surmount obstacles. You’ll leave, or try another way then get an upgrade that reminds you to go visit. It’s incredibly organic. And I’m not a 100%er of games. This makes me want to.

  4. It’s challenging for sure but not impossible. You never really get the sense that you just can’t do a thing. You just practice and figure it out. When I make mistakes, the game is so precise and well crafted, I know I made a mistake. I wasn’t cheated. Doesn’t stop me from cursing at my switch.

  5. Nostalgia. When I played my game boy growing up, I didn’t imagine 3D games being played on handheld but better, more beautiful versions of the ones I was playing then. This captures that feel perfectly without feeling like. Retread. You almost don’t feel like it’s 2d at all.

  6. Art work. It’s a beautiful game. The stills left me dubious and the let’s plays don’t do it justice. Play with headphones in handheld and in the dark for optimal beauty and nostalgia.

  7. It feels like a Nintendo game even though it’s not. It feels great on the switch in handheld. Nothing is hard to do with the joy cons.

  8. Loot, upgrades, and that sort of stuff. Like mega man x your core premise is there and you really just need to be good at that. But the upgrades are powerful and rewarding. SpoilerDashing, wall jumping, spiriting shooting, and healing, etc... it all feels so good and I’m a sucker for that sort of thing

That’s it. I hope that this helps someone decide and not have to take the leap of faith I personally don’t like taking. Also it’s coming from a fairly casual player. I don’t do this for a living and only find time in the small gaps of my day.

Edit: Im getting pretty downvoted because I wrote “yet another hollow knight post”. Am I supposed to bottle in my excitement because I missed the initial surge?

I mostly wrote this at this time because it’s on sale and I didn’t want people iffy about it to miss a nice sale of a good game on the switch. Plus I’m excited about it and none of my friends on Facebook gives a shit. So I came here.
