The defender training adventure Galder uses to instruct with is meant to be run through quickly and multiple times. It can be adjusted. I used 3 fun npcs to through a wrench at the 2 players who were at the first half of a double session we ran this week. (9 & 10). First it was those 2 against 1 fire elemental. They stopped it from hitting Galder even once, thus improving on their performance from earlier in the in-game week when they were with Tuono going up against 1 earth and 1 water elemental. Galder took damage in that first training session.
Drusilia and Hardwin then had to defend Galder more from the elements of nature, biting cold wind and help Galder over hilly terrain, while impeded by Sah-Kajul, Alex Normelius, and Garg the ogre & Moonslicer (another fun npc the community enjoys, but not a tribute character like our sub usually uses). Anyhow, Drusilia used Lightning Bolt and Summon Animals to great effect, especially as the terrain did not slow her down. Hardwin used his Giant Slayer's Battleaxe to knock Alex down and his Ki abilities to avoid danger. They managed to protect Galder for all 8 rounds, right in that last one Sah-Kajul made one last effort to through a bolt of flame at Galder, he had disadvantage due to the cold wind, Drusilia's summoned wolves giving him disadvantage, and Hardwin playing interference.
Double natural 20s. My players saw it as well, because as part of my Dungeon Master style I always roll in front of my players. So Sah-Kajul nailed Galder with produce flame. It dealt a small amount of damage but no lasting harm in training. Overall Drusilia and Hardwin passed.
They continued training, working on painting, martial arts, magic, etc. Drusilia realized more and more as ranged attacks kept tracking directly to her that her shield had been "blessed" by Isabelle the Goddess of Fire and Trickery. She asked for Sah-Kajul's assistance in riding her of the curse. Sah-Kajul agreed on the condition that Drusilia compete with him to see who was best with druidic magic and physical endurance. The best sword and board type. Drusilia agreed and they had a race to a plateau to compete as rivals. Drusilia used Spider Climb, Speak with Animals, Entangle, and Jump spells to get ahead. In spite of Sah-Kajul formidable abilities, such as causing it to rain with his spell Create Food and Water and create muddy terrain, Drusilia won in the end. Sah-Kajul removed the curse upon the shield.
Drusilia learned from Alex and Darkhani (once Darkhani arrived a day later) that the rusted short sword Drusilia had found a while back had some importance to dragons.
Drusilia settled in for the night at the end of a long week of training, ready to set out the next morning for San Haven. Hardwin would head back along with Tuono the following day. Jelenneth had finally gotten the griffon to settle.
Once Jelenneth returned, there would be some magic craftsmanship to focus on. And some issues relating to curses, ghosts, and the quests the party had resolved would need addressing. Drusilia had successfully put 2 and 2 together about dragons and giants becoming more active around San Haven. To be followed up in the second post from this double session gametale, where I'll go into more detail about some awesome accomplishments made by the players.
