My Review of SWSH after completing the main story and post-game

SWSH is sorta on par with XY for me.... like there are some really great parts of the game but something about it feels.... Empty? Unfinished? Like something is missing?

To start, the gameplay is fun, its pokemon so if you think the battle system from the past pokemon games is fun you’ll think this one is fun. The max raid battles are fun too as the hot new gimmick mechanic. There is a weird thing with how catching and battles are done that I don't like. It just feels like even if you’re battling/trying to catch a pokemon that’s just one or two levels higher that your current team it becomes like, 10 times harder to battle/catch them than a poke that's a level or two below you. I also feel like the gym battles could’ve been a bit tougher but maybe that's just me.

It took me a while to get used to the new pokemon designs. They're not bad but, as one person on twitter put it, a lot of them felt very... unpokemon-like? Probably due to having that new art director guy. I still think Cinderace's legs don't look quite right though. Besides that stuff I really like how, like what they did in SUMO/USUM, they based a bunch of the new pokemon on the region's base's local flora, fauna, and folklore like having corgi, unicorn, and apple pokemon.

The story is where the most problems are for me I think. Like when I say something from the game feels like its missing I mainly mean something feels like its missing from the story and as a result it ends up bringing down SWSH’s great cast of characters too. Like, all the characters are really interesting and have personality to them but the story kinda holds them back a bit or like…. Doesn’t go far enough?

It just kinda felt like everything happened all at once at the end of SWSH, like it felt like it was missing some good build up and the build up that was there wasn’t enough. I saw one reviewer that kinda hit the nail on the head when they said that SWSH is a good game but it felt like Leon got to go off and do all the cool plot stuff over the course of the game while you were just told to sit back and focus on your gym challenge.

I feel like maybe a way they could’ve fixed this would’ve been to have your character and maybe Hop kinda get curious about just what’s going on with all these sudden strange occurrences and go against what the adults are saying about focusing only on the gym challenge to snoop around a bit. Going along with that, I wish there was a lot more foreshadowing on the Chairman’s actions and more of an explanation for his motives. Like yeah, hes summoning Eternatus so they can use the energy it creates to fuel Galar forever in anticipation for when their natural sources of energy eventually run out but I really wish they gave the chairman a better plan to take control of Eternatus and its energy than just letting it go free or being all “Oh Leon’s gonna catch it :)”.

Another thing I feel is missing/wish there was more of is that the region felt…. idk smaller than all the others I've played. Like… the routes and caves felt smaller than usual. There also wasn’t a really good equivalent to Victory Road that gave you a good challenge before you got to Wyndon I felt. Like yeah there was that snowy area before Wyndon but it wasn’t very long and lacks a lot of gravity. While SUMO/USUM also didn’t have its victory road be very long it did have Poni Canyon to act more as a proper Victory Road by being both lengthy and having a gravity to it that nowhere in Galar quite has.

Nitpicky stuff:

- I wish there was more legendaries… like ya know how platinum had the lake trio and stuff? Smaller legendaries like that.

- While the post-game was fun and interesting I wish it opened up new areas or something instead of just giving us a round tour of Galar

- I wish we had gotten a reaction from chairman rose on his big plan failing instead of just a cut to black and finding he turned himself in the next day
