Using a throwaway because my SO knows my Reddit.
Okay, so I've had some issues and really I'm just wondering if anyone else ever has to deal with this:
I think a little background is in order here, to fully explain the problem. I suffer from some pretty severe mental/physical issues. To help deal with them as I'm unable to see a Doctor (Yay American healthcare system), I tend to throw myself into my hobbies. Now, I'll be the first to admit that I get a little obsessive (re: hyperfocus) when it comes to whatever hobby currently has my attention. It's always been this way.
Normally I'll be really into something for a few weeks to a few months. My last hobby was nail art, for instance, and I got pretty good at it and would do my own nails a few times a week. Which can take *hours*.
Now, about a year ago I got into writing. I'd always wanted to be a writer and finally found the motivation to actually do it. Several months, a shit ton of effort later, I'm 10 stories into a series with a small but steady stream of readers and a couple of loyal fans. I absolutely love it, even as frustrating as it can be (y'all know what I mean here). In fact, it's the longest I've ever gone with one hobby and really stuck to it and I have no desire to stop now.
The problem is with my SO. Now, he has no problem with my writing, or so he says, but he does have some serious issues with the fandom I write for. Well, specifically one of the characters I write. He absolutely hates this character with a pulsing purple passion and by extension the actor and everything the actor has ever possibly been involved in. At this point, it's literally the only thing we ever fight about.
In fact, after a big blowout fight a few months back, SO decided he wanted to be more involved in my hobby and said he wanted to be my beta reader. HORRIBLE IDEA, which I knew from the start, but I gave in and 'fired' my other beta. SO didn't even get through two stories and the jealousy issues just got worse. Because of course they did, surprise surprise.
Yesterday we got into yet another fight about it after I shared something actor-related with our friends in my discord server. He just can't keep himself from commenting how 'gross' it is whenever I bring up anything related to this actor/character/show. Like, I get it, he doesn't have to like it, but he can't literally just say nothing for the two seconds it takes me to share something I enjoy with my friends? He plays things I think are incredibly stupid, but I smile and listen when he talks about them, I don't point out how stupid it is EVERY SINGLE TIME.
And he just doesn't get why this is hurtful to me. He's literally trashing my favorite thing any time I try to talk about it and then gets upset when I get upset about it because he's not badmouthing 'me'. No, he's just badmouthing the thing I've sunk a ton of work and effort and actual literal tears into. He even said I only like the actor-related thing I shared with my friends because I could 'pretend it was the character'. ...couldn't possibly be because dude is actually talented, right? Nope, not at all.
So as of yesterday I told him I was just done sharing or mentioning anything at all related to the show/actor/character. No more bouncing story ideas off of him or telling him what I'm working on, I'm just so done.
So tell me...am I the only one dealing with this shit?
