I've seen countless claims of Tannehill playing vs a prevent defense against Denver. So let's look at the defensive formation for every one of his drop backs.
First - the numbers.
Tanny finished the game 13/16 for 144 yards and 1 INT. He was also sacked 4 times.
DB=Drop Back
DB1: 2nd and 11, 4:11, 3rd quarter
Cover 3 zone. This is a soft zone, sure, but this is not a prevent formation. He hits Corey Davis for 4 yards to make it 3 and 6.
DB2: 3rd and 6, 3:33, 3rd quarter
Cover 2 man formation, DBs are playing press coverage. AJ Brown gets flagged for a bullshit OPI, so this isn't an official pass attempt, but Tannehill hit him for a big catch and run. Unfortunate, but thems the breaks.
DB3: 3rd and 16, 3:22, 3rd quarter
Cover 3 soft zone again. 3rd and 16, checkdown, punt.
DB4: 2nd and 5, 15:00, 4th quarter. 13-10 Broncos
This is a cover 1, with soft coverage on the outside receviers and zone underneath. Tanny completes a deep out to Davis here, exposing the man coverage outside for 13 yards. Not a prevent D - just an open receiver downfield and a great throw.
DB5: 1st and 10, 14:53, 4th quarter
Zone blitz here is Ryan's first sack. Blitz arrived in under 3 seconds, in case anyone was ready to say he "stood around and took a sack".
DB6: 2nd and 25, 13:46, 4th quarter
After a delay of game, it's 2nd and 25.
Tannehill faces a cover 3 here, predictable play against 2nd and a mile. Still, this is absolutely not a prevent defense. Just a normal play you call in this situation. Dump off to Humph for 7 yards.
DB7: 3rd and 18, 13:22, 4th quarter
There's an offsides here, and we have a free play.
They are in a cover 3 again, and noticing the off sides, Tanny scrambles and launches a ball 45 yards in the air at Darius Jennings downfield. It's ultimately incomplete, but it's the farthest football a Titan's QB has thrown all year, and he had the wherewithal to throw it on a free play. He took a hit and threw this on the run also - Tannehill has arm talent. This is a defense stretching play. We haven't seen ANY of this.
DB8: 3rd and 13, 12:54, 4th quarter
Soft zone cover 3. Third and long, Tanny makes a great throw to the sideline and Davis can't barely keep his feet in bounds. The ball was caught, and thrown well past the marker. Just a tough throw and catch on third and long. Punt
DB9: 2nd and 11, 10:59, 4th quarter
Tampa 2 zone, with the extra DBs playing deep. Ryan torches this defense to hit CD in the seam on a deep out route for 18 yards. Tannehill is consistently hitting our receivers outside the numbers with lazers that are exploiting the zones. This is not beating up on a prevent. They're only up 13-10 with over 11 minutes left. This is just a good fucking pass for a first down.
DB10: 1st and 10, 10:40, 4th quarter
Playaction roll out to the left. He's immediately got 3 defenders converging on him after the play fake, and hits Jonnu Smith, who you can see open behind the initial wave of pass rushers, for 8 yards. The playfake was beautiful, the D bit, Jonnu ran past the LB, and Ryan nailed him. This was a zone blitz with a cover 3 look and 5 men rushing Tannehill. Pretty aggressive prevent.
DB11: 3rd and 4, 9:22, 4th quarter
It's now 3rd and 4 after Henry lost 2 on the 2nd and 2 run. Not what you want from the fucking RB in this situation at all.
Tannehill is facing a cover 1 man, with a QB spy in the middle. Once the lane opens up, the spy blitzes, which you can see about to happen here. Incomplete pass to AJ Brown.
DB12: 4th and 4, 9:17, 4th quarter
This is a cover 1 zone, where Nate Davis got beat immediately and Ryan got sacked. He actually steps up into the pocket nicely, but Ben Jones gets beat at that moment and Saffold is literally standing there not blocking anyone looking behind him at Taylor while Tanny gets hit. smh. Nothing new here.
DB13: 1st and 10, 4:53, 4th quarter, 16-0 Broncos
They scored another FG. Amazing defensive stand after amazing defensive stand all fucking day.
Tanny faces a soft cover 3 here, hits Humphries for 6 yards. Predictable defense up 16 under 5 minutes to go.
DB14: 2nd and 4, No Huddle, 4:35 remaining
Tanny faces a soft again, hits Dion Lews for 9 yards on a check down.
This is beginning to get soft in terms of the aggression of the D on some of these plays. But let's have some perspective. These are the simple fucking throws that we haven't been able to rely on this year.
DB15: 1st and 10, No Huddle, 4:15 remaining
Wanna see a play why I'm excited? Here's a fucking play that excites me. This is a zone blitz with a cover 3 shell. Whoever said they played prevent D the whole game against Tanny is flat out fucking foolish, but I'll do a tally later. The receivers are engaged here, and I circled the square where Tanny is about to rifle a pass through the seam for a 16 yard completion to roast the blitz. We have been desperately missing this. All of our receivers have caught multiple balls from Tanny at this point.
DB16: 1st and 10, No Huddle, 3:50 remaining
This is a cover 3 zone. Bunch formation, close to the line of scrimmage, typical Art Smith amirite? Except for some reason, suddenly, these guys are getting open. Tannehill nails AJ Brown for a first down.
DB17: 1st and 10, No Huddle, 3:18 remaining
Another zone blitz. So far, they've shown cover 1, cover 2, cover 3, and a variety of zone blitzes. Arguably the most aggressive prevent defense I've ever seen.
Yet another completion. You shouldn't be counting, because this is all elementary school stuff, but that's 5 completions in a row, 3 for first downs. Is it soft coverage? Yep. Are the passes and reads any less impressive? No.
DB18: 2nd and 5, 3:12 remaining
Cover 2 man with a line backer stunt blitz. Sack. This is the third sack that Tanny suffered.
DB 19: 3rd and 12, 2:43 remaining
Back to plays that get me fired up. Again - we're late in the fourth quarter here, and they're playing a cover 2 man with press coverage and a blitzing line backer. Second man coverage blitz in a row. This is not a prevent defense. Period.
Tannehill exploits a mismatch and converts on 3rd and 12 by nailing Firsker for 25 yards. Great catch. Great throw. 3rd and 10+ has been a death sentence for us.
DB20: 2nd and 4, No Huddle, 2:01
2nd and 4 after the bomb to Firsker, then a scramble by Tanny. He runs no huddle and gets the play off before the 2 minute warning. It's an incomplete pass, but Ben Jones is called for holding, so it's coming back.
DB21: 2nd and 13, 1:51 remaining
The left defensive end executes a nice stunt move, and Roger Saffold is again standing there alone not blocking shit. He has been completely lost. He's not getting beat on all of these plays, he's just not sure what to be doing. Second time someone has got inside leverage on him for a sack while he was turned toward Lewan who was handling his man.
Bad new: this is terrible. Good new: THIS WILL IMPROVE. This is a good fucking LG, and he and Taylor just started playing together. Give this shit some time. It will come around. Shitty play here though.
DB 22: 3rd and 29, 1:44 remaining
After another penality, we're completely fucked. This is a prevent defense, btw. Granted, a lot of this has been soft zone, this is the first play where more than 1 defender is 20 yards from the line since Tannehill came in.
Yeah he forced it in. Oh fucking well.
If you can honestly sit there with a straight face and tell me that wasn't the best QB play we've seen all year, I'm calling hijinks. He was playing against an aggressive, blitzing defenses who was mixing coverages throughout. They were bringing blizes with tight, man coverage with under 3 minutes left in the game on multiple occasions.
Ryan made probably 4 of the 15 best pass plays we've had all year in this game - the seam shot to Humphries, the seam shot to Firker, and two deep out routes to Corey Davis, all for first downs and much more.
We haven't been able to effectively press the ball down the field like this all year it seems. Mariota has moved the ball through chunk plays, many of which were of the short pass and long run variety. Tannehill is clearly moving the ball with more zip and accuracy and he's not afraid to sling that bitch into some tight windows or toward the sidelines down the field.
We should be excited. Regardless of your opinion on Marcus, this is a good, starting caliber QB we've got coming in to save our asses here, and there's a decent enough chance that it's a significant upgrade.
