Hi everyone. I work at a power plant as an IT support technician. I have worked here ten years but last month we got a new boss.
I really love to grow my finger nails long and have nail art done on them. I would estimate that they are currently one inch long past the tip of the finger.
This boss (who is male BTW, last was female) is convinced that my long nails are an impediment to me being able to type correctly. In fact he made us take a typing test (against our futile protests).
He said my score had too many typos and the reason must be my nails. He is ordering me to clip them down to the top of the finger.
He says because we work at a power plant there are supposed “grace mistakes” that are possible and that my nails make them more likely; he managed to convince the higher ups of this and they are backing him in making me trim my nails.
Now here is the thing - I don’t want to. I consider them my free expression and my long nails are no more risky than a guy who stays up all night and comes to work tired, or a stoner who comes high, or even an old person with arthritis or Parkins.
I don’t have a boyfriend or children to support (just two fur babies) so I can risk being out of work for a few months if I am fired. Plus I would sue if they fired me for my nails and I’m pretty sure I would have a good case.
Question is - I would obviously like to remain employed and it would be great if my dick boss (who is also incredibly misogynist BTW) was the one to be fired.
So my question is can they legally fire me if I refuse to cut my fingernails?
My location is Portland, OR
