I did a ton of research...read two books (The Art of Raising a Puppy, and German Shepherd Dogs Week-by-Week) as well as watched a ton of videos and organized a playlist even to help me train the pup as the weeks go by. Basically, nothing is working out even close to where I thought it would. I understand it's not going to play out perfectly, but my pup has no interest in treats for training rewards, fights the leash tooth-and-nail, refuses to pee outside (opting to do nothing but lay down or eat the mulch by my house instead). About the only thing I've done moderately successful is I feel I have her taking to the crate OK. How often should she be crated and for how long? one book makes little mention, the other basically has a schedule mapped out where the dog is crated almost half the day.
Is this normal? I basically got no sleep last night, even though the pup slept from 10pm-1am and then from about 1:20am-4:30am. I did not sleep at all during that time because I was asleep in the chair next to her crate (too long to explain...my wife and I were in different rooms all night).
I guess I'm just feeling really defeated and I'm hoping she eventually takes to being trained and having treats (I'm just working on crate training and hand targeting so far). I'm retired military and my last 6 months in the AF I lived with an adult GSD full time while his owner was deployed and I did really well with an adult. But that's the extent of my experience...and I obviously know training a pup is way different than training an adult, but everywhere I read and watch, owners' pups are just so thrilled to work and train and mine wants to do anything but.
Thanks for any constructive guidance.
edit: a few words.
