I need advice in getting into the dental hygiene field

I'm 29, turning 30 in February. After 7 years in the work world, I realized the dental hygiene is the career I want to be in. I've done nails for over 10 years and the work was satisfying in a way that I believe dental hygiene will be. After doing research on schools, I've learned that there are not as many schools that offer affordable associates degree for dental hygiene. I've applied to three community colleges in the Northern California area and am obsessively thinking about my chances of getting accepted into the program.

I still have about 5 science classes of pre-requisites I need to take in order to apply for DH school. What do you guys recommend I do in terms of:

  • Knowing which pre-requisite classes to take? The three schools seem to have different pre-requisite requirements. I would need to take pre-reqs before applying so how do I know which school's pre-req. I should satisfy?

  • How can I increase my chances of being accepted when the acceptance count is only about 20 students per year?

  • Is the job market growth and salary reported by BLS really accurate?

A little about me:

I currently hold a B.A in Communication and an Associates of Arts. I have a 3.2 GPA. I know that GPA isn't great, but I would work really hard in the science courses to get my grades up.

I'm looking for 2 year programs that would be under $40,000 in Kansas City, MO and San Fransisco, CA Area.

Accelerated program at Concord costs &80k!

I don't know what I would do if I don't get into a DH program, but I guess everything happens for a reason. Any advice and encouragement would be greatly appreciated!
