[Warning, long rant ahead! Also me talking in a really crazy way... don't blame me, please. This is just a really long essay, so maybe grab some popcorn or something...]
OK, I've officially did it. I've completed the first season of Re:Zero, in anticipation of the second season, even though we don't know the release date but... Bah! Lemme tell you, it was really horrific. As in NOT that the show was bad; I was aware it's gonna be different. I didn't imagine it would be this interesting. Really fun. I mean horrific as in, it was really mind-blowing, really dark; so much violence, so much blood. So much things has made me scream a lot, so much things has put me on the edge and made me shake a little scared.
Before you continue reading; This is coming from someone who watched the anime first. I may be biased but... Basically, I felt more immersed with the anime than LN. But I did watch light novel and am still, afterward.
Lemme tell you about first episode. I like that the anime shows him buying something, and then him being transported just as he exits the shop. I was like what the hell! And we see him walking around in the fantasy world... him failing to use magic looked hilarious.
Him falling down the bridge made me scream a little but I sighed when he was fine.
Seriously. So close.
Then he sees the thugs. I winced when he was easily beaten... Felt doesn't help him. So we then see Satella saving him from the impending doom of the thugs.
She looks cute, but the cat-spirit, Puck, is more cuter than her. I feel like I just want to hug him! Anyways they go to look for clues abou the insignia. The way they helped the little girl was so cute. A little heartwarming and so light-hearted...
Even though I found out it wasn't. Not all of the story.
The story gets serious once they head for the robbery shop. Subaru and Satella split up to search for her whereabouts. The point that made me actually scream loudly is when Subaru sees that the blood is actually his and that he's about to die; I only screamed louder when Satella died as well.
I kept screaming a bit.
Thinking it was the end--
And then we see him standing in front of the fruit merchant. What? I was like, 'what?'
The heck is going on?
This time, Subaru manages to defeat the thugs with ease. In the next moments or so, Rom is alive. Which surprised me and made me scream.
How is that possible?
He was DEAD!
I understood it when I tried to piece my mind together.
I liked Subaru's interaction with Felt. Especially, that cellphone, also called 'malta' or something.
Speaking of cellphone, it has any importance later on. Why did it get carried with him, anyways?
Anyways, We see Elsa. She's a likeable character... but once she asks Subaru something, this is where I had my second scream afterward, with her murdering Felt, Rom and eventually Subaru as well.
I guess you can no longer judge a book by its cover.
The violence in the anime is a little more real, even if it's hard to describe.
Loop again. What? Again? Subaru doing the same things. Expect, when he calls her by that name, Emilia is offended. How was this possible? This time, we see Felt stealing her insignia. Subaru tries to follow her eventually, only to see the same group of thugs. Tries getting past them, being tired of them, only to fall... being stabbed unintentionally by the knife.
And another scream. Another startled yelp... more like, YIKES!
He see the same bag of potatoes, and Subaru begins to understand what is actually going on. For him it was a little late, though...
He calls his new ability Return by Death; the ability to return to a past time when he dies. And we see the same group of thugs again; admittedly I myself am a bit sick of seeing them. This time, he make a good decision to call the guards (or police as he calls it), for we get introduced to Reinhard.
The red-haired swordsman.
Subaru goes to the same place where he died, but we see Elsa again. Tch. She should not even be intruding... Subaru barely escapes, as she spares him. Goodness...
He meets with Felt; she's violent. Same scene of trading, then someone knocks on the door. I got a feeling of nervousness...
...but it's not Lisa. It's Emilia.
The scene is different from this point on. She asks Felt to hand over the insignia. Subaru then tries to act nice. And Elsa tries to slash Emilia from behind-
NOT SO FAST!
Thanksfully, he remembers to ask Puck to shield her.
Intense battle scene coming. To be continued- wait no. Anyways Emilia battles, then Rom attempts to assist in the situation. Elsa throws her weapon, Felt throws her own weapon to block the attack, but it still killed Rom... F-FUCK!
Not only that but I felt a little bad for Felt. I learned he was like the only family member for her.
That retard gave me a reason to hate her. Shoo shoo, disappear!
His determination to help Felt escape and standing up is probably the biggest development, for Arc 1. When she grabbed his leg, I thought it was over again... Reinhard came to battle against her. We learn Rom is alive.
After he's healed, the knight use a move, and happy ending, unill Elsa stood up, trying to slash Emilia and then yet again failing from Subaru blocking the hit with the club. The crisis is averted.
We finally learn her name. And heartwarming moment... when Subaru finally realizes he's bleeding again, as he faints. Once again I screamed very loudly, despite her healing him in time.
WAY TOO CLOSE...
...for comfort! And that night would be the last chance to gaze at the moon peacefully.
He wakes up in the place... Subaru meets Beatrice. The interaction is a little funny, I could say, at least unill Beatrice holds her hand against the boy's stomach. You can probably guess my reaction. Thought he was gonna die. Again, he wakes up. He sees Rem and Ram. They look cute, I must say... even the short moment of feeling violated gave me a chuckle.
Subaru and Emilia do some exercises, those moves coming from the boy's world. And we learn that Puck calls Emilia 'Lia'. It looks like a nice nickname. Oh, and Subaru petting and hugging the cat is cute. Subaru's face too. uwu
We get introduced to another character, Roswaal. Beatrice calls Puck 'Bubby'... seems like he is one of Beatrice's only friends, asides from Emilia. And Subaru mistakes Roswaal for a clown. If I was with him, I would have smacked his head! He's such a blockhead!
Some politics here. Emilia wants to be the 42th ruler. Subaru casually says he's from another world but shouldn't they be questioning him? Even though he admits he's the suspect here.
Later on, we learn that he's good at sewing...
...but he sucks in everything else. Like. What the heck?! But I guess being like an... Otaku... Makes you like that.
That night, we have Subaru and Emilia interacting. He promises her that one day they will see the village, or see something together. How romantic... Guess the romance will develop, so let's see.
Night falls. He goes to sleep. And wakes up to Rem and Ram greeting him like guest. Guest? GUEST?! Wait what?! And we see his finge- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Yet another death, but wait, if he died, that means NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The promise with Emilia never existed! What the hell! What the heck! Why did you troll us Author-san!? WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Anyways. He realizes that it's the second time coming to the mansion. 'Save point' is different. Then he meets up with Emilia again. The petting scene is really cute.
Oh, the bath scene with Roswaal. Awkward, one word. Awk...ward... when Ram sees Subaru. She has the sanity despite seeing Subaru naked. How can she be this patient? HOW CAN SHE KEEP COOL?! So humiliating!
But Rem wanting to comb Subaru's hair is adorable. It's like she's the older sister here. That reminds me, I wonder what would happen if he had a sister and they got transported together... hmm, interesting, but getting back to main point, that night Subaru asks Emilia for a date out; he explains it to her, and she thinks that he went for a date with Rem. LOL beaten out but she accepts anyways. Cue credits and happy ending!
...as if. Subaru then vomits. Wait, he vomited!? HOW?! He struggles... no, no! It can't be, the impending doom! This time, it's worst! Worse than what I'd seen! Something literally ripped his arm out... yuck... YUCK... YUCK! And then he's mutilated, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
[Insert signal here, please wait unill we repair the signal]
Back in session. There appeared to be an attacker. But who? He gets kicked out by Beatrice. How rude, I suppose...Guess there's nothing much to do when you're in an Isekai world...
Some fun moment with Emilia and Puck. Hilarity ensues. Subaru says 'thanks for the assistance, father' to Puck... wait, father? Daughter? Puck is actually Emilia's father??
Anyways, we learn that mana is also part of one's lifeforce. If it's too weak, one may also die. Scary. Subaru telling a fairy tale of the orcs to Ram is cute and really distances away from the dark moments. By the way, I think I like the blue orc. I mean... I do sometimes admit I want a reward, but I don't necessarily want always a reward, I just like to help others if I can, even if it may give a consequence.
We learn Lugunica is called the Dragon Kingdom as well as the Jealous Witch. One thing I wonder is that Emilia denies that she's the Jealous Witch. But could it be possible? Hmm, the mystery deepens...
He goes out of the capital for his journey, but he's suddenly attacked by a spiked ball. He manages to block it with his jacket as he pulls the chains, asking the person to reveal himself. And so, the person does reveal... oh... no... oh god no... OH GOD NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
FUCK YOU REM, FUCK YOOOOOOU, HOW COULD YOU?!
I don't wanna see, I DON'T WANNA SEE--
Time Loop
Reawakens. And that fateful moment with Emilia comes, where Subaru is ready to tell her the truth. I was hoping he would say it.
But my heart sank once that hand came out to cling on Subaru's heart. Why, just why? If it wasn't interrupted, then he could've said it, and the rest would've been easy, but NOOOOOOOO, he's stopped! Now I really wish that Emilia at one point could learn the truth herself...
Oh, and Beatrice complains he smells of the Witch. So it's all real now? And supposing earlier in the first episodes, the witch's name was Satella... could she be related to him?
He makes it through to fourth night. Nice, I guess? Actually, not. We learn that Rem's dead. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS?!
Ram accuses him of killing Rem, or knowing a thing, and she threatens him with magic. But him killing her can't be possible!
He escape, to a cliff... where he rests, but Beatrice appears in front of him. It's cute unill Ram appears. Girls can be violent. The moment is when he says he loves them, and then he jumps off the cliff... CLIFF!? This has really escalated! They brought cliffhangers to a next level! And I like that he is determined to somehow save them; I don't want to scream. This is what "character development" feels like. Good!
Speaking of manga for a moment. I'm glad the deaths aren't as gruesome in the anime. The manga or novel had him being actually chopped in the neck during that time Rem attacked him, and him being impaled in the ending. uuUUGGggGGHHhh
Time loop once again.
Subaru thinks Rem, Ram, and Roswaal is liable to kill him at any time. He then consults Puck on magic; there's a clear difference between magic and spirit arts. He also goes to inspect his magic... Fire? Water? EARTH?! AAAAIIIIRRRR...!?!
Subaru has evolved into Shadow Magic!
That's just debuffs. "Just debuff?! What the heck!?" is what I'd say, but I expected this considering the plot. Punk gives us the glimpse of Shamac, that blinding magic. And it's really creepy. In fact... it looks similar to when something tugged on his heart when he tried to tell the truth.
Subaru tries to use the magic for the first time.
And fails miserably. No PP POINTS. ZERO.
After working out, his head is leaned on Emilia's legs...And then our boi rants a lot. So adorable. And come next morning, he finds one possible lead.
They go to the village. They interact with the kids. Subaru is bitten. Come afternoon, Roswaal has an urgent business, and flies off. Subaru begins to think the events must have changed by changing the actions. I understood it already.
He goes up to Beatrice for inspection; he does have a curse. And the black mist is on his hand. It's the dog. Whyyyyyy ;_; It was cute, yet... he had to curse him! How, just how, do he has something special?! WHY?!
Our boi and Rem come to village. The kids are unconscious but alive and one of the girl is still in the forest. Subaru's resolve to Rem is cute. It's heartwarming. More character development. Subaru seems to have lost all of the fear for that moment.
Rem is also a very strong girl. Although they are outnumbered. For now they run off, and something swamrs them, but Rem takes the hit for Subaru and we can see her so bloodied. I thOughT sHe wAs strOnk but apparently NOt
She looks uncute, then a horn grows on her head, and she's slaughtering mabeasts. Which is cute and yet violent... She gain control, and Subaru pushes her, being bitten by dogs. NOOOOOOOOO, NOT ANOTHER TIME LOOP AGAIN-
[Insert yet another no signal]
He's in the bed, but this time, the ability doesn't happens again. And we see Puck a little closeup, from first person.
That part of him making biting sounds was weirdly attractive, yet scary... it's bound to get someone interested in that exactly. More than that... hehe...
N..Nothing! Nothing! Anyways! Clapping, clapping, how adorable. Gives me a real reason to hug him. I just want to keep someone like him!! :3 :3 >:3
Ram looks proud of her food. Beatrice comes over to tell our boy he has only half a day to live. But he won't be scared because of the events and him experiencing death.
Rem went off on her own. Subaru and Ram come looking for her, while Ram tells him a little about that horn. They have a plan to attract the mabeasts. Which is the... witch scet, ironically.
They fall off of a cliff; Ram save both of us at once by using a magic, leaving her however exhausted; Rem comes but she can't control herself. Subaru gains courage to slash her horn, but I FREAKED OUT as he failed, how could he fail?! But he manages to cut the horn off in the end.
We are greeted with their pasts. Normally demons had two horns, but twins had only one, so they are hated... yet they were spared. Rem can't use magic as good as Ram. And the latter was hurt because at one point she hesitated. She hesitated to help Subaru-kun from the scent.
But Rem's an idiot.
She put both of them in danger.
Ram carries her off, while our boy come to buy time. He battles the giant Mabeast, at this point he tries out the new shadow magic... but it didn't have much effect. ANOTHER LOOP?!
OBJECTION!
Roswaal comes. They hug him. So cute, and a good way to end the intense action. Later, he tells her how it doesn't matter if she isn't better than Ram, she has her own qualities. She works hard and good, and even her bewbs are so cute and bouncy~ Hubba hubba~
In the end, they hug each other. Lovely. Cute. Whattathing than this to end Arc 2. Best thing to ever happen. LOVE, LOVEEEEEE! This is what I call development! Not those isekais that has the female chracter immediately falling in love or in heels, but more like a slow burn, which can lead to trust!
Slow! Burn!
Also he finally asks Emilia out on date. This time, for real. YES
Onward to Arc 3. She is invited, and Subaru's attempt to convince the old man to tell the reason for inviting her sounds lame of him, who just had character development.
Also Wil introduces him to Felix. Her.. UH, HIS ears look cute and wiggly. Nice. And Subaru-kun and Emilia-chan eventually meet up with another knight, Julius, who kisses Emilia's hand. What, WHAT?! EWWWWW! NO, NO! NO EMILIAxJULIUS PAIRING, NOT AT ALL!
- NOT.
- A.
- CHANCE!
Subaru meets with Priscilla, who knocks him out. This... is not what I expected. At all. How rude. He just decides to give her the appa. Even if she didn't deserve it, it's still a cute gift she can at least appreciate.
Before the meeting, Emilia asks Subaru to not go. She doesn't want him to embarass her. So this is what an isekai world really looks like. Oh, and I just realized now that he doesn't die every episode.
Emilia is at the royal celebration, but she notices he has come which frustates her. And Priscilla flirts with him. Ewww! What the heck?!
The 4 are in a meeting because of the new prophecy that has awoke. Today would be the day that one of the priestess would be chosen. And the final person has been found. It's...
DUN DUN DUUN
FELT
Turns out she has a role. The situation's looking dicey. Our boy's feeling for Emilia will not come second to anything. Which is really cute of him.
Priscilla insults not only Felt, but also Emilia, saying the latter looks similar to the Jealous Witch. RUDE. But... what if this is really true? What would happen in the future? The declaration is short in the anime, in the LN it's expanded upon.
To them, Emilia's presence is a insult, and they want her to leave. Well guess what, the Main Hero comes to save the day! Attendate, best hero!
Guess what, Julius also breaks his hopes and his conviction! COUNTER! I don't dislike his opinion tho. It feels like a pointless agruement that our boy is making.
The Old Man Rom came to save Felt but is captured... and Felt accepted the condition, so they let him go . But it was a mistake in my opinion.
Getting back to main point, the royal selections begins. Julius challenges Subaru to a battle. So confusing. He declares a death sentence. WHAT THE FUCK?! HE HATES HIM?! Something seems odd about that. Julius is overpowering him.. I dislike him.
But something is really odd about that fight. He's fine afterward, but it was supposed to be a death penalty. It could be because he wanted to save the protagonist from a worse fate.
Interaction of Emilia and Subaru is really humane. Realized you always don't need to follow the boy's action; He was wrong. He could've done something else, that's what I admit at least, instead of being this selfish or reckless. Also the heart tugged is emotional.
It's clear that Subaru and Emilia's relationship is strained.
He's serious; he declines the knight's offer to make up with Julius. Even if I didn't expect this to happen, this would make sense, considering what happened to Emilia. Which is still making me sad.
Yet, his determination that Emilia isn't a witch is impressive.
He meets up with Crusch. Despite how strict she was, she has a kind personality. And she even tell him, why look down if he did what he thought was the right thing? Credit to her for that.
Subaru is thinking that if he has a chance, he can make any problem disappear... But this is where I am truly disconnected.
He's not right. Not every problem can disappear. Selfishness. And that really shows when he talks to Crusch for a meeting. The problematic part is when he want to go to help Emilia; he is told that the contract with Crusch will break the moment he leaves for her.
He leaves with Rem. Rem leaves him too, and at this point that arc was intense. The others were right.
And in the moment, he sees the horrors of dead peoples. This isn't what he expects, and I'm pretty sure not for me. He comes back to the capital...
Rem is dead.
Rem.
is.
DEAD.
** Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD. DEAD-**
NOOOOOOO!
This JUST gets WORSE. Ram is dead. She's been killed so easily. Petra is dead. This sucks. THIS. SUCKS.
- WORSE OF ALL
Emilia is dead. MUTILATED. DISASSEMBLED.
Subaru comes down. To see what is going on. And he sees those same cult members... then his face seems frozen. Eh? Eh? He's frozen? And then his face-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
[INSERT NO SIGNAL YET AGAIN]
Same scene. He's not well. I feel bad for him, how much pain or despair to see all of his friends dead in the previous timeline...
Despite being kidnapped, he doesn't do anything at all before seeing Betelgeuse, the sin archbishop of Sloth. Oh my god, OH MY GOD, HIS FACE IS MENTAL AS WELL. TOO CRAZY. TOO SCARY.
I don't know why Subaru isn't doing something.. It's a little confusing to hear him say Subaru is pride...- hmm, when you think about the witch's scent, it suddenly makes sense.
The moment of the bailistic MOMENT comes in Rem covered in a lot of blood. She is suffering. I have to be thankful of the anime not being as gorey as the LN. LN spoilers; Light Novel
Eugh.. No more of this...
I.
Don't.
Wanna.
Rem dies, freeing Subaru. He carries her. Then it ends with a creature telling him to sleep. Credits. Considering the scene, one can suppose that it's like a bad ending. I was starting to cry a little, seeing Subaru all frozen. It is really sad... unless I went back a little, and rewatched the credits.
I looked at Subaru. He seems to be crying out... unill his head falls off. FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL OFF! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Not ONLY that, but THE way the creature says it... It's PUCK, isn't it? Puck, Puck, PUCK... You disappoint me. YOU'VE DISAPPOINTED ME. FUCK BETELGEUSE. FUCK PUCK. FUCK YOU, BETELGEUSE! I'M GOING TO-
yEt AnOtHeR tImE lOoP
A lot of politics. His resolve doesn't look good at all. If I were him, I would have probably tried to do things calmly. And Crusch's reply, although very irritating, is rather realistic. Realistic ruler, where she doesn't need to be kind, and is liable to ask for any compensation. Subaru's mind is clashing with the fantasy mind or world.
He walks up to her. That face of his at Crusch... oh no no, NOO, DON'T ASSAULT HER-SAMA-
Thanksfully it doesn't happen. And then that part with Priscilla; Subaru trying to lick her feet was disgusting. WTF?! I may not be fond of her behavior, but Subaru being kicked is deserved. PERVERT.

Last up with Anastasia... He's only this want person, he's gaining nothing in return; the key to negotiating is about how much he has and how prepared he is. This time, He makes up his mind and goes with Rem. She leaves him though.
At that end, in the night, we see a whale. A freaking floating WHALE!! FLOATING!
It looks right at Subaru- no, it's not just him. I can feel a chill! It's giving me goosebumps! To me!
That was scary, that's so scary, that's too scary! And Rem promises something to Subaru before he's knocked out, and then wakes up... She jumped off to intercept the whale. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! And after a while of talking about her... Otto suddenly doesn't know Rem. What the fuck. What the hell. He says it like he knew him, then he no longer knows him.
The fuck. the hell. This is one of the craziest moment. Even Subaru is no longer mental for the moment. He gets knocked off. I SCREAMED.
I thought he was gonna die.
But somehow, he's fine.
He sees the children... and SUBARU HAS FAINTED
He wakes up to Ram. He tells her the truth; Rem doesn't remember her. What the fuck. What the hell. WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT IS THIS!?
She existed, yet she didn't... this is crazy. THIS IS CRAZY.
He can't take it. He can't fucking take it anymore. He meets up with Emilia. This is a nice moment. It was finally time for him to confess the truth of the ability. I was really happy when Emilia heard it, but she dies shortly after. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I thought there would be a way Emilia can know. Without the heart of Subaru being tugged on. But instead, she dies. SHE DIES.
I really wanted her to know. I WANTED TO. Everything is crushed. It turns out that she may not know it. Not at all. Not directly. WHY DID YOU DO THIS, AUTHOR!
This is horrifying. Terrible. But at the same time, tugging and important. He wants to accept, but is doing it half-heartedly. At least it is good that Beatrice didn't kill her immediately. Her sadness is realistic.
Then he meets up with Betelgeuse. AGAIN?! I'M TIRED OF HIM! His anger is deserved as Subaru can see him!
Puck comes, his enraged face is still cuter... Unill he turns into a big monster. He says that Subaru broke three things; the promise with Emilia. Which is a serious thing. It's also one of the things we have to realize in the real life.
Objection of Emilia's wish to stay in the capital. It does puts more weight to what Subaru should've done. Finally, letting her die... it sounded more like Subaru let Emilia get killed at his hands.
Puck is right, for once. The final nail is when he laughs like Betelgeuse, only it's him who is laughing at his mistakes. I don't even scream, for once. I want him to die... anyone else feeling it?
Time looping asides. Subaru wants to run away.
He wants to live with Rem, together. He wants to escape reality again. He's suffering an identity crisis, something that 25 or 30s can experience. Rem proposes that he stay for a while to help him get a decent job, and have a family.
But are they happy? No. Not AT all.
And Subaru breaking put me made me go bailistic. He's realizing his faults. His mistakes.
Rem's confession is heartwarming. It's the biggest thing in Arc 3, even if she's rejected. He faces his actions. He didn't achieve anything that is worth mentioning which gives the "you're slothful' from Betelgeuse and Puck more weight and meaning.
He learns his perspective is forced. This where the true prologue begins. It's no longer your ordinary shounen, but also not a dreamland ala 'Dora the Explorer' or lighthearted cartoon. EP 18; in Arc 3 the story is 10% in. I've heard that story currently is halfway, if not a little more than halfway in.
It's not Re: Square One. IT'S Re: Zero, beginning the life over in another world. It explains why didn't he even bother wanting to return home. Though, I'm pretty sure he may think of it but who knows.
EP 19 is turning point. I feel closer, if not connecting with our boy. He focuses on a different objective, the White Whale. This makes the source of his information less suspicious. The cellphone comes into play again. I wonder when will the battery even run out, now that I think about it.
He really shows us the development that he has learnt from previous loops.
From Crusch, the reasons behind what you desire is as important as what you offer (Murderous intent -> Defeating a beast that causes problems). If one can't back up the truth or convinctions, it's not possible to believe him.
From Priscilla he learned that in negotiations you approach your partner on equal terms. (Went on his knees and wanted to lick the feet -> Stood up and went for a handshake while facing the person directly)
From Anastasia he learned how to use the information he gathered wisely and how to not only want but also offer something in exchange. And his eyes even changed.
Willhelm reveals his name once again as Willhelm van Astrea. And it's revealed that the first Master Swordsman that was killed was actually his wife. Which is pretty shocking.
He eventually get recognition from all sides. Towards the end we get another nice scene between him and Rem. It's a callback to EP 18, which by the way, is like adapting the plot of an alternate story.
It's not a leader like Crusch, it's not Willhelm who is the one wanting revenge, this time it's Subaru and Rem, everyone follows them actually!
Back to the fight. So intense. It's one sided, unill Willhelm manages to cut off the whale's eye. Ugh. So horrifying. I even wanted to look away for one moment. At this point, there is an information I've got from my friend (thanks you, kind friend!) about the fog.
There are two types of fogs. First off, mental pollution which is why people go crazy, due to sanity. Subaru is not affected due to witch scent.
And then the fog of elimination which Subaru and Rem barely escaped. Subaru makes the connection because Crusch and the others count a lot less people. He remembers all of it. Anyone directly hit by this type of fog will be be forgotten by everyone and history itself. This also explains when Otto previously didn't remember Rem.
THe's aware he can make those Mabeasts like the whale come toward him with the Witch scent. But the end shows that there are three whales. THREE. OF THEM. WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE HELL.
IS IT OVER?!
NO, NO, NOOOOO! It all depends on Rem! One was enough! But three?!
THREE?!
THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-
Insert breaktime
OK, why are there three? THREE!? It's a bit horrific to see those men not moving. From fear. So Subaru is forced to move forward. Thanksfully, Rem is not erased by that fog.
And Ricardo is alive. He tells that the attack... felt lighter. Light? LIGHTER? Wait so does this means it's an illusion?! And this is already quickly confirmed! Oh, and Willhelm manages to get out of the whale, somehow being alive as well. Thanks goodness. GOODNESS.
Next, one of the best scenes about Crusch. She takes Subaru as a prime example to rally up her men. It may appear rude at first, but she is trying to restore what Subaru lost in episode 12 & 13, his reputation. Crusch addresses many things within their men's morality.
I also respect Subaru now. He may be one of the weakest character, maybe in all Isekais. But he is trying to do a noble cause. He is trying to at least show effort. He seems to have the best spirit or morale.
So much. He even taunts THE WHALE with it. That's a serious development there damn! He lures him to a tree for the trap thanks to the witch's scent.
The end is damn blowing. Crusch finally accepts him; she will at least respect him. The alone moment with Rem is well-earned and rewarding. It's so light. THe crisis is over. Everything is over. Everything is well.
But then Julius comes up. Oh boooooy, Julius. I no longer hate him, but I still had a grudge against him... Calling himself as Juli, and a mere wanderer sounds like a mature thing if we consider that in EP 12-13, his presence was enough to anger him.
He starts his speech. The reputation he gained now give a completely new level of authority. In episode 16 a madman driven by hatred begged for the slaughtering of the cult...no reason to help. He also had no explanation for why he knows that the Cult appears. Now things look completely different.
Next is really big step in Subaru’s development during the dialogue. He managed to see his own mistakes, apologized and speaks out his gratitude to someone who ashamed him in front of everyone. He talked to Juli on equal grounds and regretted his previous actions.
Oh, and I.. well, we, learn about the restriction of the RBD (Return by Death) ability. Subaru outright mentioned events from his earlier lifes, but he wasn’t stopped. This confirms that the witch really just interferes if the context of his words cause other people to be sketchy about it.
Maybe one day, if the trust is high enough, he could theorically say the truth to Emilia at one point, without causing consequences.. But this really isn't possible.
Anyways, the confrontation with Betelgeuse starts. I'm tired of HIM. FUCK HIM.
He deserves the slashing he receives from Willhelm. And then we learn that book of Gospel... which in reality it's just a proof that one is part of the witch cult. That's it?
THAT'S IT?
I thought everything was fine after his defeat... unill those Unseen Hands reappear again. THEY KILLED FIVE PEOPLES. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
- YeT
- ANOthER
- NO
- SIGnal
Okay, back to session. Betelgeuse 2 is slashed up! THE MOVIE but for real, it's possible he can steal as many forms as he wants. Subaru feels guility, but Willhelm tells him to fight on. If he is not dead, if he is not broken, then he can fight on. Which is an amazing lesson to give because it convinces Subaru to not attempt his ability again. They were insignificant to him.
In the next episode, someone puts hallucination on everyone. Julius has six lesser spirits, like Puck's magic but has less power. But he can control all six, which is extremely rare. Subaru also regains consciousness. They confront the person and it's...
DUH DUH DUUUUN DUUUUUUUUUUU
WHY, RAM? WHY, RAM? RAM? RAM? RAM? RAAAAAAAM!
Turns out it's a misunderstanding. Blank letter; means one doesn't accept the person's presence and is usually a declaration of war. Surely Subaru didn't mean it, right?
We arrive at the village, Subaru tries to talk but is blabbering. We can see the big change from before and after the battle with the whale because Felix gives him the encouragement needed. If he can throw a tantrum at the castle, then why can't he in the village? And guess what, HE ACTUALLY DOES IT!
He sees Julius afteward in order to make up with him. We learn that our boy has high affinity with spirit magic.
The guy that Felix knocks out is named Ketty, from EP14 and is a member of the Witch’s Cult. Otto doesn't know he's part of the cult.
He's the one leading Subaru to Otto, and telling the latter to accept Subaru's offer "would find his answers". This means that Subaru’s meeting with Otto and his arrival at the mansion might have been all planned by Betelgeuse in advance which strengthens the theory about the gospel being able to predict the future.
Aterward we see the destoryed village. NOOOOOO! ALL BECAUSE THERE ARE TWO FINGERS!!! FUCK YOU BETELGUESE, FUCK YOU, FUCK YOOOU!!! HAFF...
Haff... Ugh... Betelgeuse attempts to kill Subaru again, but Emilia comes back. This reaction toward her being alive is disgusting. Only our boy deserves to love our Emilia, not him. Ick. Yuck. AFTER the scene, we see the gaze... NOT because of resentment. PRAISE. IT'S PRAISE. Gratitudine.
We see the heartwarming scene.. before the spirit slips out, and the boy suddenly runs away. They follow him, and... gess what, HE'S (NOOOOO) POSSESSED (NOOOOOOOOOOO, NOT THIS!)!
How? It's the miasma, isn't it? B-But.. no, this is not the right time...! And then Julius gets ordered by him to kill him... wait, no, NO, THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING... Felix's cry is depressing... but when Julius slashed hi- ...h...im...
Time loops
So Subaru returns and his checkpoint has moved. It’s Subaru’s first death and "failure" ever since his start from zero in episode 18. Instead of dwelling on the past, he uses the past's knowledge to his advantage. This is a good indicator of the development. I like that he has to reach out for his allies, instead of probably relying on himself to find that out.
Several differences after the time loop. Willhelm goes there first. What comes next is another clever step taken by Subaru, like apologizing for blank text.
So Subaru used his knowledge from his previous life again and cut off the enemies’s line of communication. I might not be the only who thought that was badass. He really did it.
Next we see how Subaru convinces the villagers. Two references from EP 16, about Priscilla and about Crusch.
Oh, Betelgeuse confirms Emilla is not Satella, at least not according to him. Just a vessel that needs to be tests. This sounds a bit intimidating if you think about it.
Finally, we go back to that cliff. So familiar. Subaru died here in EP 7. And then we see Julius come; the climax against him begins here.
Now we see Betelgeuse trying to use Unseen Hands, but Julius manages to dodge them and see them, because he is sharing senses with Subaru. It's like a game; if even a hand catch one of them, the game is over. Which could be interesting; speaking of game, is there a Re: Zero videogame?
Subaru lets himself get possessed. Because of his previous encounter with Satella he knows that she is extremely fixated on him and that she punishes any misstep. So Subaru tried to do misstep after misstep while Petelgeuse possesses him to doom him. It’s actually more powerful than any direct attack could be. His entire reason to live just crumbled away.
CRUMBLED AWAY.
HAHAHAHAHA! TAKE THAT, BETELGEUSE! YOUR LIFE AS THE SLOTH IS OVER!
He reappears again, while we see Otto accompagnying Subaru. THIS AGAIN?! I'M SO SICK OF HIM. SICKNESS. S I C K N E S S
But I love what did Subaru do to get rid of him forever. One sin down, six... erm, five, to go, possibly. And then he catches up to Emilia's carriage, for one reason; to grabs those flaring things, and carry it away.
The tick.
They TICK.
NO, NO, NOOO! NOT THIS AGAIN! THE EXPLOSION, NOOO! GOD, OH GOD, I-I CRIED IS THERE GOINGTOBEANOTHERTIMELOOOPNODAS0ID2W0NE2139-
~~Last pause.~~
Thanksfully there is no time loop. Thanks goodness. This was way too close for comfort.
Let's jump right to Emilia and Subaru-sano dialogue.
We witness how for the first time Subaru applies the things he has realized about himself on Emilia. He acknowledges that the majority of his intentions were straight up wrong and marked by entitlement as if he was some kind of destined hero but he also stays true to the intentions that were true and noble.
On the other side Emilia has been avoided and cursed for her entire life. For her to have someone despite her origins is a first for her and surely overwhelming. The world is basically biased toward her with hate, but there's one who not only cares about that but will be offended by that.
From the poem of the novel.
"Under the setting sun, an outlander and a silvered hair half elf continue to exchange their feelings.
Many loops of despair and sadness that continued for a long time, finally overcame them and achieved this quiet, peaceful time.
This is just a story to reach those quiet peaceful time. This is just a story with long lost winding roads, where feelings intervened
A boy without self confidence, letting his feelings known to a girl without self confidence. This is just a story to try his best for a purpose like that."
And the story ends there with a confession to Emilia. Well, sort of anyways. SORT?! YOU COULD SAY THAT! SAY THAT, SAY THAAAT... THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!
THIS WAS ONE HECK OF A RIDE! HOW MANY TIMES I'VE LOST MY MIND? HOW MANY TIMES I'VE HAD TO YELL? DID I PISS MY PANTS? HOW MANY TIMES DID I CRY? GET ANGRY?
THE EMOTIONS I'VE FELT HAS ALL BEEN VIVID! SO REALISTIC!!!
AFTER
WATCHING
THIS
I don't feel like I have a mind anymore. I don't feel very surprised. I feel blank. It is like I've been refreshed, thanks to this anime. Thanks to this show, thanks to this light novel, I feel blank. Not blank as in not having mentality, but blank as in, I've cleared my memory. Now, I HAVE BECOME DIFFERENT!
THIS WAS SO MINDBLOWING!
Wanna hear how many times I've had to scream? Here, I'll slap you this!
Total amount of screams in the show: 122 times
Yes, yes, yes. I know, I know... Call me crazy if you want. But I'm pretty sure this anime was crazy.
CRAZY.
Anyways, now that I'm done with my endless, 1000 page long essay with 1 year... no, a day of essay creating that was a bit long, filled with surprise and reactions, and the summary of THE ANIME. Cut some words due to 40k limit.
I'll be signing off! See you in Season 2, tata~!
