[Manga] Episode 9 Anime & Manga Differences/Comparisons

Been doing this on my own for the past couple episodes, but now i figured I'd write it down and put it up here. I plan on doing this for every episode to come. Bit of a disclaimer, I didn't write this up as like a "now you don't need to read the manga" sort of thing or a "here's what the anime got wrong" thing. I just genuinely enjoy looking at the differences between the two, and I wanna share it for anyone else who has that curiosity but doesn't wanna/can't comb through the manga and anime. Also, I'm sure a lot of these differences don't exist in the japanese scripts, and are only coming through because of the different translators. Anyway, here we go, this episode covers chapters 18 and 19 of the manga:

• Askeladd doesn't pull any hairs from his beard in the manga.

• Inconsequential translation difference I just feel like pointing out, in the anime Askeladd says "those bigwigs all want London", in the manga he says "the muckety-mucks want to get their hands on London". Means the exact same thing, just felt like showcasing the manga's funny choice of words.

• In the manga, Askeladd notes that London is "laden with riches" in addition to the Thames giving them a supply line to Wessex

• When Askeladd throws Thorfinn's knife back, in the manga it to Thorfinn's right. In the anime, it's his left. With the way Thorfinn's sitting on the mast in relation to Askeladd, the manga version makes more sense.

• In the manga, Askeladd says "if you can kill Thorkell, I'll give you your duel, and anything else you want." In the anime, its "I'll duel you as often as you like, go bring me Thorkell's head."

• Side note, Floki doesn't look great at this point in the manga. Yukimura's art wasn't quite there for him in particular. His (much better) anime appearance is based on the art from much later in the manga (much like most of the designs in the anime). But yeah, he looks kinda goofy in these chapters.

• Thorkell putting his hand on the soldier's head and telling them to stop doesn't happen in the manga. It's just a wide shot of him towering over every soldier with his arm out to tell them to stop (he doesn't speak the words "stop" is what I'm getting at).

• In the anime, Thorkell says "Is King Sweyn here? He's tough. For an old man." In the manga, his lines are "What? King Sweyn's here? I'm impressed! To travel so far at his age..."

• In the anime, Floki asks why Thorkell "draws his bow" on them. In the manga, he asks why he "turns his sword" on them.

• In the anime, Floki says "don't misread the flow of the world" whereas in the manga he says "do not find yourself on the wrong side of history."

• Language barrier, Thorkell is shown (through different fonts) speaking English to the troops on the bridge.

• In the manga, when talking with Floki about Thorkell, we don't get nearly that clear of a look at Sweyn's face. Just the shot of his hand as he says "resume the siege"

• In the manga, we don't get the wide shot showing the size of the log Thorkell is carrying.

• Translator having some fun. In the manga, Thorkell says "At this rate, it'll be a hundred years before London Bridge comes falling d-". Anime basically says the same thing, just with less delicious cheese.

• In the anime, Askeladd says "the huge man with the log", in the manga: "the great big idiot holding the log"

• Anime line: "This jolly little fool is all mine!" Manga line: "If he's foolish enough to charge me, I'll take him down!"

• In the manga, soldiers are shown ducking under Thorkell's big swing, and we don't get any kind of close-up of him smiling.

• In the manga, Thorkell has a goofy, surprised look on his face when Thorfinn launches off the log. Also, Thorfinn doesn't take his dagger out midair. This super well animated part of the fight is, to put it simply, way more crazy than that part in the manga. In addition, in the manga, Thorfinn lands on the 'railing' after dodging Thorkell's downward strike (here he takes out the dagger), but then on the next page is on the bridge where he lands in the anime.

• In the manga, the shot of Thorkell throwing away his log is shown before he talks to the troops, in the anime its after. Also, in the manga, he throws the log with his left arm onto the bridge. In the anime, he throws it off the bridge with his right arm.

• The translation of Thorkell saying "ochibi-chan" is "shrimp" and "little one" in the manga. In the anime it's almost always "kid"

• In the anime, their fight has been largely mirrored (when compared to the manga). In the manga, Thorfinn starts framed on the left and charges to the right at Thorkell, who punches with his left hand. Flip all those directions and you've got the anime's framing. I'm sure this is because manga reads right to left, but film is "read" left to right so they go with their respective directions to go with their respective flows of how you look at them.

• In the manga, Thorfinn cuts the side of Thorkell's hand while in the anime, it's the top of his wrist.

• In the manga, Thorkell calling himself "oji-chan" is translated as "Uncle Thorkell" instead of just being lost like in the anime.

• Flipping directions again. In the manga, Thorkell kicks with his left leg, in the anime it's his right. This then changes which leg Thorfinn kicks, but Thorkell still catches himself with his left hand and gets stabbed in his right.

• In the manga, Thorkell doesn't yell and have his mouth wide open when he slams Thorfinn into the bridge.

• In the anime, when Thorkell slams Thorfinn into the railing, he lets him go. In the manga, he doesn't let go of him until Thorfinn cuts his fingers off.

• After cutting off Thorkell's fingers in the anime, Thorfinn lands on his feet and jumps back to the railing. In the manga, he just falls and rolls into it.

• Thorfinn's dagger looks WAY smaller in Thorkell's hand in the manga.

• In the anime, Thorfinn just kinda rolls off the side of the bridge, but in the manga he stands and dives off.

• In the manga, you can "hear" more of the people among the wounded.

• In the manga, Sweyn says "London still stands" to which Floki says "Yes, but not forever" The anime lines are "I see, so we can't capture London" "It's not that we can't, it'll just take some time." Floki also mentions, in the manga, that if they just keep at it the people of London will tire in time, no equivalent line is in the anime.

• In the manga, Sweyn seems to off-handedly leave Canute in command. "I will leave the siege in the hands of...ah, yes...I will leave it to my son, Canute." In the anime, he seems like he planned that in advance. "The 4000 soldiers will be under the command of... Canute" (admittedly, he pauses, but it just seems to be for dramatic timing)

• In the manga, Ragnar is just wearing chainmail at this point, the design he has in the anime is from later. Also, his scars are way more obvious in the manga.

• In the manga, Ragnar has only like half a line before Floki tells him to shut up. Not the multiple lines he has in the anime. Also, after Floki tells him to hold his tongue, Sweyn says "No. Speak, Ragnar." A lot of this particular exchange was modified and moved around in the anime.

• In the anime, one of the soldiers kinda threatens Ragnar as he talks to Sweyn. This doesn't happen in the manga.

• In the manga, Ragnar confirms that Canute is 17 years old.

• In the anime, Sweyn says that Ragnar has spoiled Canute, which Ragnar apologizes for. But in the manga Sweyn says "I do him no favor in coddling him", and Ragnar has no line in response. Sweyn does say that Ragnar bears SOME responsibility, as Canute's attendant.

• In the anime, Sweyn and the troops walk away from Ragnar and as he stands there, he says "Your highness.." In the manga though, Sweyn says Ragnar will be the second-in-command and Ragnar just bows and says "...as..as you wish, majesty..."

• In the manga, Thorfinn doesn't lean on a tree after getting out of the water. He also notes that he has "bruises all over.." in addition to his other injuries. He also flashes back to Thorkell at this time, rather than later like in the anime.

• The scene on the bridge is a lot shorter in the manga. A lot less interactions with the random soldiers.

• The anime adds a couple lines to Askeladd before he runs into Thorfinn. The manga just cuts from London to Askeladd bumping into Thorfinn. Also, in the anime he tells Thorfinn "if it hurts to walk, I'll just leave you here.", in the manga, he says "if you can't keep up with the march, we'll leave you here."

• Thorfinn's hair is still wet and matted down during this exchange in the manga. Also, he just smacks his shoulder back into socket, rather than crouching down and using the ground like in the anime.

• Translator kinda messed up here, or maybe it's just another unnecessary change. In the anime, Thorfinn's last line is "That madman. What's so enjoyable about battle?" As if he's just referring to Thorkell. In the manga, his line is "Fucking madmen, every last one. What's so fun about war?!" Clearly referring to everyone. The anime even adds lines to the random troops of them having fun with war, to really nail the point home. That's why I'm more inclined to think this is a translator error. I think the anime moving the flashes of Thorkell to this part might have made them mess up, where I think the point of that move was to show that all the vikings are thinking alike, warranting Thorfinn's line condemning them all.

Hoo boy, that got more extensive than I was expecting. I even tried to skim over relatively minor stuff like most of the wording changes. All-in-all, great episode. If you got through that wall of words, I hope you enjoyed it.
