I feel a bit of the criticism against Black Clover is unwarranted. Now hear me out

So I made the mistake of following the hive mind without thinking .... the first episode left a bad taste in my mouth what with characters and writing and the MC himself...and the hundreds of comments claiming the anime is the worst thing since crocs and how the show only gets good 20+ episodes in but still had major flaws even then, and it really convinced me it wasn’t worth it. However when I was ready to give up, I kept seeing my main anime YouTube channels revere newly released content of the anime as something so great. And they were channels with pretty excellent taste so it persuaded me that maybe, just maybe the show’s worth watching. So I tried to come up with strategies to work around the early, supposed terribleness of BC.... most people say the show gets better at around episode 20ish and everything before that is utter poop. But at the 22nd episode and considering all other critiques I’ve seen for the show, I’m honestly believing some of them were an exaggeration.

1) the animation. I honestly don’t find it nearly as bad as it was made out to be like Holy shit the way people went on I expected a badly done Deviant Art anime OC from some 14 year old tumblr user. Do some scenes fall short? No doubt but is it the level of quality of the geometric titties we saw in Tomb Raider at least? Not in the slightest.

2) the characters. This will be a long one since this is harder to debate because I understand this critique the most. Yes the constant repeating one-liners and extreme 1Dness and characters who exist solely to make you laugh once and then regret their and your existence for the rest of the show? Utter torture. However, that’s only with some of them. I understood this with the Black Bulls and others later on, especially Sol and Charlotte (Jesus that was painful) but overall it’s not like the entire cast is this shallow. Some characters aren’t even exactly 1D or have one-liners but just fit more nearly into a specific role but have exhibited different sides to them- as with Magna being the lame and loud dude but nearly sacrificing himself in Saussy Village. Also, while the characters may not be great as stand-alone, but the group dynamic?? Excellent imo. The episodes of the dungeon with Asta, Noelle, Luck and Yuno’s own little group? They all connected extremely well and even brought out a side of Klaus, an originally easily hateable character, to someone I wouldn’t imagine. I think some characters bring out the absolute best in others and while some- definitely worse, this side at least is more seen than not. Also, I do think the overly done running gag while super annoying, was done knowingly. I don’t think they could possibly be that oblivious.... I would hope not... I think it helped make the arcs for some characters feel much more deserving... seeing Asta develop the mini harem and win countless battles so early in the story with rage, something that’s seen in countless Shounen, was a lot more satisfying after the writer beat me over the head that he’s some stupid ass, overly optimistic brat who’s utterly useless. Same with Luck. Although I don’t find his gag as overdone as the other BB characters, seeing his mini arc made me understand his gag much more. And how what happened in his arc built him up to the traumatized boy he is today and that’s why he’s still beating us over the head with “wanna fight -blank strong- character?”

3) Asta. Yes the major issue everyone has with this anime. Some even insist it would be better without him. And you know why I’ve seen people hate him so much??? Solely because of his screaming and genericness. Okay first the screaming, yes it is nails on a chalkboard but again like with the other gags, it is done purposely. I mean even the other characters make note of how annoying it is so I doubt they didn’t know it would be painful to hear. That aside, yes he’s pretty generic. However the only actual sense of genericness is really about him getting OP early on and getting enraged to defend people and all that Jazz. Even then with the OP thing, it is much more understandable why he seems to kick everyone’s ass so early on. It’s not necessarily that he’s invincible, he’s got anti-magic, everyone else has got magic. No shit he’ll win all the time. And right now (I know this changes later) he’s only got a sword so it’s not like it’s some asspull. Personality wise, Asta pretty quickly becomes much more tolerable. Mostly because they later implement scenes where you can’t help but root for him. Him kicking that thief’s ass at the end of episode 1 wasn’t anything remarkable or cheer-worthy. But him sounding off on the Silva’s on Noelle’s behalf had (as I’ve seen fans note) hyped af. He’s got a persona where despite his insecurity and deep acknowledgment of his “shortcomings”, he still believes he can push through. Cliche I know but seeing as how ruthless everyone is in Clover Kingdom, this trait first starts off as annoying to admirable. Seeing him win or power through much deserved battles feels as rewarding as an observer of his character as it is for him.

This is just my take on the major criticisms of the show. I don’t think BC (as far as I’m on it) is perfect or maybe even great. In fact I rate it maybe a 6.9/10. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, I get hating BC but I do think SOME of the Criticisms were more exaggerated rather not undeserving.
