What would you think of a Boogiepop videogame?

Boogiepop got adapted into manga, anime, and even a live action movie. But what would you think a Boogiepop game could look like?

A visual novel could actually be the most logical way of proceeding through a Boogiepop software adaptation, but let's try and think outside of the box with some very specific mechanics and genres of game instead. (i'm actually planning on giving a shot on making my own urban fantasy visual novel which will already be heavily inspired by boogiepop anyway)

Personally, I'd love to see a sort of open ended adventure/action game. Not necessirly an enormous open world game or RPG, but something more story oriented with a very atmospheric and gloomy city at night, with some great urban and filtered art direction.

You've probably seen those kind of Dark Souls fanarts set in a modern post apocalyptic tokyo.

I honestly think it'd be a good look for the game. Just playing as boogiepop (or other characters like Nagi), jumping and flying around the city, fighting against emblematic figures of the light novel, or a completley made up story like Phantom. You could interract with other important characters, save them, help them through indirect means... And of course, play around with cables. You could get some direct feedback gameplay by, instead of fighting with your fists, swinging your cables around, using the environment at your leisure to dispose of certain ennemies... This could be a pretty rad concept.

Also, just simply exploring the city, the school and every important places of Boogiepop and look at all the references to the original product would feel amazing. I can clearly see myself just gazing at the city from above with the night lights illuminating the town.

If I had to imagine anyone willing to make such a game and give it the credit it would deserve, the easy and boring answer would be PlatinumGames (or simply anything directed by Taro Yoko lol). Their games palystyle have some excellent animations and gameplay feedback, and for a character whose weapons are heavily based around weight and swiftness, I could see them doing a good job in my head.

If not them : Ryu Ga Gotoku studios would be my best bet. Kamurocho and Sotenbori at night under the Dragon Engine look fantastic in Yakuza 6/K2, and just imagining playing as boogiepop, fighting some goons and saving people... I'd die to see this happening. Imagine some heat actions, but with Boogiepop doing some stylish figures with some random street elements, dancing and using their cables around to kick some ass. Lovely.

From Software is an exellent studio when it comes to environmental storytelling, atmosphere, and Sekiro being a very fast paced game (and it has cables! though not as great as they seem to be lol), seeing them doing such a thing could be really exciting too.

Suda 51 is already used to make such grey and somber games, and Silver Case is his most similar work to Boogie when it comes to atmosphere. Murders, psychopathic behaviors, drugs... And Killer7 is a really experimental piece as well. Kill the Past in general is kinda similar to Boogiepop, but seeing how Grasshopper's adaptations weren't the most excellent and Suda51 is an author above all else, this probably wouldn't be the best mix, despite the inspirations being similar.

But honestly, if there's one studio who could nail such a direction for a game, it's RGG studio. Narrative wise, graphics wise, sound design wise...

For the music, I honestly adored Ushio's work with the 2019 anime already and i could feel some tracks like fire witch ii being a great battle theme. I'd looooove a dynamic soundtrack. Some subtle electronic beat/sound when you're in the streets, admiring the city, and have some more percussions and decadent beats going on when you're fighting with some seamless transitions both in the audio and the combat.

Kazuhiro Abo (Travis Strikes Again composer) does some similar really juicy electronic music, and I'd love to imagine his interpretation of the boogiepop universe, considering he's very varying in style, asking a lot of different artists to perform with him. This is one of his recent work : Very addictive beat, with a 17 year old rapper girl. Badass

What about you? What kind of game could you see Boogiepop in? What would you want to get from it?
