Although I'd signed up for a six month Match.com account. I'd deactivated my account two weeks ago as this gal literally received zero messages. Yesterday, I received a security email from Match stating I'd logged in from a different device and to "click" to confirm it was me who logged in. I clicked "No it was not me" on the email and then proceeded to be automatically logged into Match.com.
Rookie mistake. My assumption is that clicking that link in that email, triggered something allowing access to my Match account.
The adventure begins:
Today when checking my Gmail, there were notifications from Match in my inbox. There were at least 20 messages from men in my inbox. Befuddled I logged into my account to find another woman's photo (I'm black - she was white).
Seeing this.. I immediately emailed Match. Apparently Match peeps aren't there on the weekend. So I figured no big deal.. I'll just hide my profile again. I did so, but then noticed messages were still hitting my inbox. The scammer was literally logged into my profile and communicating with men and sending out likes to their targets while I was online attempting to hide my profile. I deleted the fake photo and began to update the other areas of the profile, my race, kids, etc. Almost as soon as I did, they'd be changed back! I figured.. okay buddy.. you wanna play.. LET'S DO THIS!
I then began sending emails to the men that had been contacted. The spammer was in the midst of communicating with them. I sent a message in all caps saying "THE PERSON YOU ARE COMMUNICATING WITH IS NOT THE OWNER OF THIS PROFILE, THIS PROFILE HAS BEEN HIJACKED, DO NOT SHARE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION WITH THIS PERSON, THEY ARE NOT REAL AND ARE ATTEMPTING TO SCAM YOU". The spammer would send another message asking for a phone number, I would send my message again in all caps. This went on for a good 30-45 minutes with various men. A few of them finally acknowledged me, thanked me and moved on, but there were two who would not believe and legit kept communicating with the spammer!
I stopped sending messages and was able to again deactivate my profile, delete the fake photo of the spammer and change some details of my profile. I'm having issues updating my password (have already updated my email password). Seems for now the asshole scammer has moved on.... for now.
Secure your accounts Match.com users! And be wary of phishing emails! I work in tech and consider myself extremely wise in the way of phishing attempts.. that email got me!
But here's the truly depressing part. The essay part of my profile, remained the same.. I express how self-reliant I am, yet appreciate a chivalrous man that isn't shy too hold open a door or open a pesky jar for me so I don't break a nail. I share how I'm enjoying completing projects around my house as a new homeowner and I mention my love of photography, theater, art, road trips, traveling to music festivals and how I'm a budding oenophile, home chef and foodie. The words of my life and the photo of a caucasian woman.. caused my profile to receive 20+ messages in my inbox in less than an hour. With my own photo, I received not even one response in two months. Physically, I am more attractive than the photo of the white woman that the scammer used when he hijacked my profile. Overall, while regaining control of my account was a pain in the ass... this situation has confirmed for me that black women will never be viewed as desirable in the world of online dating.
