I’m an aspiring musician/producer and I just had a lamentable realization. People I barely know are more receptive to my songs than people I’ve been friends with forever. I used to share my friends songs faithfully never got the same in return. Maybe there’s some sort of malicious intent buried deep in a friendly facade. I was talking to my client who I run studio sessions for and he hit this nail on the head he said “fuck promoting to friends and family bro, they’re always gonna be biased because they know you.” He has a point because the love I give out I never receive but it’s 10 fold from complete strangers. (A few weird experiences I’ll elaborate at a later point) I don’t approach people like hey bitch check my shit out. (I maintain decorum doing my promotions and I don’t dismiss you if you’re not interested I simply apologize and wish them a nice day it’s the only thing I can do) then they attempt task me with designing fliers album art and running promotions. Is the money gonna magically fall out the sky mf? I know it’s somewhat harsh to request payment from the guys but this a lot of work to put on one person not to mention the various other projects I have to complete.
