[QUESTION] Can you play classical guitar with short nails?

I used to play classical guitar at university. There was an accident involving a trailer hitch, and I shattered fingers 2 & 3 on the right hand. That was over 15 years ago and I haven't touched a guitar since, until about three days ago. I pulled out my old guitar, restrung it, and played the only song I could remember (Snowflight, by Andrew York). Well, now I've got the bug, but there's an issue.

I also practice Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, and I love it so much. Trouble is, long nails are a no go in most martial arts, and especially true for grappling arts like BJJ. They will either tear off in spectacular bloody fashion, or will slice open training partners in similarly bloody fashion, with included infection risks.

So, is there a way to play classical effectively without growing out the nails? I've seen those steel finger picks, but I've never seen a classical player use them, and have no idea how they'd sound, or if they'd be compatible with the strings, finger feel, etc. Thoughts?

TL;DR: How can I play classical with very short nails?
