I'm primarily a jazz musician, I have no problem running scales/arpeggios with a pick. I can also play the folk/etc. fingerstyle without any problem, and can generally play fingerstyle jazz guitar as long as I do not need to run lines quickly. Does anyone have any advice on learning to do this fingerstyle?
I would normally learn to do this just by doing it over and over. But one question is what fingers should I use? My Index and Middle are my strongest and fastest fingers, it's tempting to do just this. It's even reported (I think Dick Hyman said it) that Art Tatum would play pentatonics on the piano with just two fingers.
Especially if I am playing a pattern that has two notes on one string and then three on the next, should I start Index+Middle, and then restart with Index after the string change or use Ring finger?
Also: I am a piano player and am not really able to grow out my fingernails. (I used to have nails and would cheat by holding my index finger like a pick and using the nail as a pick, but could not press piano keys straight on, so I cut them)
Thanks!
