New and Approved - Polish and Product FAQ

FAQ

What’s the official policy on polish list enforcement?

All nail art and manicure posts on RedditLaqueristas are required to list polishes and products. The rule has been in the subreddit sidebar for years, but as of June 2, 2018, the rule has been officially implemented and enforced. All submissions of colored or decorated nails must include a list of polishes and products. The list must be written within the Reddit post. There is a time limit of 12 hours to add your list. After 12 hours any posts lacking a polish list will be removed, without additional messages or warnings to the user who submitted the post. Having any post removed is a negative experience, and we don't want you to go through that. If you won’t have time to add a product list to your post soon after submission, reconsider if this is the best time to be posting or if you should wait until you have more time available. The photo will keep!

Does my post title need to list the polish names?

No! Adding your list as a comment is perfect. For nail art with a lot of colors and products, a comment can be more practical than a long title!

What if I link to my blog or other website that has the product list there?

Still list it here. It’s 100% okay to link to your other website with additional details, but posts to RedditLaqueristas must have the list of polishes and products somewhere within the Reddit post itself.

When your nail art is compelling and someone wants a tutorial, they will click through. Nevertheless, the majority of users have made it clear that they do not appreciate being forced to visit another site simply to find out what polish you used.

What if my nails were done in a salon or by someone else?

We love nail art from all the amazing, talented nail techs out there, we get it. As a customer you may not know what the artist used to create your mani. If you don’t know the products for these reasons, please add Salon flair to your post and comment that the product list is unavailable. If you can, please try to note the brand the next time you visit your salon or nail tech. Note to Nail Techs: If you are posting your work on a client, salon flair isn’t enough because you know how you created them! Please include your products.

Do I need to list my base and top coats??

Nope! In the past, we did ask that you list your base and top coats, to give others the exact information on how your manicure was done, and how that factors into the final look. It has been said to be taxing to list them by users, so we've made this much needed change.

However, Holo top coats will need to be listed, as there are many, with varying effects. We will also require you to mention in passing if you used a matte top coat.

E.g. "I used OPI Lincoln park after dark with INM northern lights holo top coat" / "I used OPI Cajun shrimp with a [matte/mattifying] top coat ".

What about acrylic or craft paints in my nail art??

We will no longer will require the listing of Acrylic/ craft paints. You don't need to list the brands or shade names used.

However, we do require that you mention in your list if you used it. E.g. "The base color is OPI Big apple red, the design was done with [Acrylic/ Craft] paint! "

But what if the polish is hard to find, only sold online, or not available for most people to buy?

Still list the polish or product. Even if the product is discontinued, only available in one country, an ancient polish, a professionals-only product, or otherwise impossible to get, still list it.

Can I add links to the polish or other supplies I used?

Sure. Direct links to online stores or official brand web pages are totally acceptable, but the polish brand/shade name must be in your Reddit post, so that users are not required to click through to the online store. However, spamming links or posting content for direct financial gain will not be tolerated.

What if I can’t read the bottle or the label is missing?

Add a link to your photo of the bottle. You’d be surprised by how resourceful lacqueristas can be when they want to track down a polish! But, a mention of "The label is missing/ scratched off " is acceptable as well.

What if the polish never had a name? My label isn’t missing, but it doesn’t have much identifying information.

This does happen! It’s especially common with nail polishes that come in sets with no names or shade numbers. Note the brand, set, and purchase location if possible. Example “Light pink polish: Beauty Moment brand — No name/number, came in their Nudes set at Marshalls”

What if my polish is a custom color I mixed myself?

No problem! Just add flair or a comment. If it’s a simple combination you made on the spot, please list what you used. If it’s frankenpolish you made ages ago with a bunch of different things, don’t worry about it.

Do I need to list my nail embellishments and other products? (Loose glitters, vinyls, rhinestones, striping tape, foils, chrome powder, holo powder, mermaid powder, etc.)

Nope, no, no, with a side of no. Many have expressed listing the brands and shade names and purchase locations of the above to also be taxing and irrelevant. We will no longer require you to list any of the brand/shade/ purchase info, for any kind of embellishments that fits into that category.

However, a quick mention of the use of Vinyls, striping tape, mermaid powder, holo powder, etc., is needed.

E.g. "I used Essie's marshmallow over Vinyls for this look! " / "I used OPI's Alpine Snow with Mermaid powder on top ".

Do I need to list my stamping plate brand and numbers??

Yes! We will still be requiring users to list their stamping plates brand and number. This is an important part of a nail look, and it is responsible for making a nail design. This allows others to see it and not mistake it for freehanding, a water decal/sticker etc., and perhaps grab it themselves.

Do I need to list the system brand/shade name underneath my polish?? (Acrylic, hard gel, polygel, builder gel etc.)

Nope! We will no longer require users to list the brand/shade name of the nail enhancement used underneath their polish.

However, a quick mention of the nail enhancement will be required. This will help filter the "are those your natural nails" "those aren't your natural nails" comments.

E.g. "This is Essie's Tart Deco over Acrylic"/ "I used Sally Hansen's Expresso over Polygel".

What if I already posted this nail art, and that original post had the product list? Do I need to add the list again if I submit new images?

Yes, all posts of nail art need to have the polish list somewhere in that Reddit thread. Don't just link to your previous post. Copy and paste the polish list to the new submission. Also, consider using an app to combine photos into one image. The free app Layout is one example, but there are many other options out there!

Can I help when I see posts without a list?

Yes! Please do report posts without polish lists. User reports are incredibly helpful to make sure those posts don’t slip through the cracks.

I reported a post for missing its product list, but the post never got removed. Why?

The mods may have missed double checking the reported post after the post became 12 hours old. Please tell us if you notice this happening.

However, please check if the post actually has the necessary details, and you just didn't realize this at first!

If the post really does break the rules and it wasn't appropriately removed, feel free to politely yell at us in modmail.

This is a community!!

With all the rules/requirements gone through above, we want our users to remember, this is a community. This is not a dumping ground for your nail photos, blogs, or social medias. Interact with others!! If users ask for more details on products that the rules/FAQ don't require you to list, help them out. Try to provide extra details to those who ask, help others find the product you used. We are a community, we want to help others improve and refine their abilities and make them feel welcome.

To add to that, if you want to list your base/top coats, embellishments, or system used on your nails... go for it! It's not required, but if you want to give others more insight and info on everything you used, we welcome it!

Thank you!

Feel free to ask questions below, the team will be around to answer them :)
