Nail doesn't grow back properly after loss due to trauma

I feel strange posting this amongst all the perdy nail art, but this place is the best place I could find for this?

So about 3-4 years ago I lost my big toe nail from trauma (tripped over niece's toy and stubbed it). It eventually grew back fine, albeit maybe at twice the thickness?

Fast forward a bit later I notice a strange ledge starting to form as the nail grows. Couple months go by, turns out the ledge is from a new nail forcing that nail essentially out. This new nail is at regular thickness so I think, yay!

Well, fast forward some more. Beginning of this year-ish. I notice that the nail is slightly yellowish toward the middle, however there are no other signs of fungus or anything. I later discover that the nail is somewhat detached from the nail bed again, around where the nail is yellowed. It has gotten slightly worse, and the nail is starting to bow a bit (arch upward if that makes sense). I fear that I may lose the nail again, which I really don't want because I prefer open toed shoes to closed.

Anyone have any advice? This has been an absolute nightmare. I wouldn't say I wear super tight shoes or anything, I actually prefer flip flops to anything else. Ive just started wearing a band-aid on it to hopefully help protect it from detaching but I am heading toward wit's end here.

TLDR:: Lost big toe nail to trauma a few years back. It's growing back slightly detached, any tips on how I can help fix this problem?
