White Sox manager Don Gutteridge seems to have no regrets about having to play several “home” series in Milwaukee’s County Stadium every year in order to increase ticket sales. Today’s 8-3 thrashing of the Pilots was the Sox’s fifth straight win at County Stadium. “I don’t know what it is,” Gutteridge said after the game. “If I could, I would take this stadium back to Chicago and nail it down … But why we are winning here now and not in Chicago, I don’t know. Maybe we ought to play more games here.” Such remarks are sure to heat up speculation that White Sox will move to Milwaukee next year — since the loss of the Braves, Milwaukee has been clamoring for another major league team.
The White Sox received a good deal of assistance from the Pilots in the form of four errors, including three by Tommy Harper. But for Jim Bouton, the day wasn’t a total loss — he pitched an inning and two thirds, giving up just one hit and no runs.
In the Milwaukee clubhouse there’s a sign that reads: “What you say here, what you see here, what you do here and what you hear here, let it stay here.” The same sign hangs in the clubhouse in Minneapolis. Also, I suppose, in the CIA offices in Washington. If I were a CIA man, could I write a book?
