As promised, I’d fill you all in on my attempt to fix the no-glazing issue on the Gucci Double G Flat Sandals I ordered from Mr. Fishy a few days ago! (Review here) My stuff was delivered earlier today but I wanted to wait until the animals I live with were all asleep so no one can interrupt and the table doesn’t get bumped into and turn me a screaming wreck. Please note: do this at your own risk! I figured my sandals couldn’t look any worse so why not? 🙃
-Angelus Black Acrylic Leather Paint
-Angelus No. 610 High Gloss Acrylic Finisher (I ordered both from the brand’s website)
-2 fine-tipped paintbrushes (I just walked into Michael’s and picked up two I thought would work. For my RepLadies wondering who Michael is, it’s an arts and crafts store chain where I live- I didn’t barge into some random person’s house and steal their paintbrushes, I promise!)
-1 standard emery board nail file
-paper towels and baby wipes to wipe up smudges and streaks
•I read a post on here about someone who fixed their LV bag glazing and I went from there. They suggested to go over the surfaces you plan on painting with sandpaper to make sure the paint has something to grab onto and I felt like sandpaper would’ve been too big to go over the tiny edges of my sandals so that’s why I went with the nail file instead. (I used the orange, rougher side for this part.) Since the edges were already pretty roughed up I didn’t need to sand/file them that much, I just used it to even out the lines so they looked more uniform.
•Next, I applied a thin layer of the black paint to the unglazed edges with steady hands and the paintbrushes. I alternated between the 2 I had to make sure I got every little nook and cranny covered properly. Then I waited about 10 minutes for each coat to dry. (I did about 2 or 3 coats total and touched up in some spots that I felt needed more color.)
•I washed the paintbrushes in the sink thoroughly with soap and water to make sure there was no trace of black paint and gently blotted them on a paper towel to dry.
•Before I applied the gloss layer, I lightly tapped on the edges I painted to make sure they were fully dry. Then, I went over them with the softer side of the nail file very lightly to buff some of the paint away so the gloss could stick better. Then I dipped the paintbrushes in the glossy finisher and went over the painted parts. The finisher has the consistency of water so less is more, I noticed. If it ran to other parts of the shoe I quickly wiped it off with a paper towel or baby wipe, whatever I had closest to my hand at that moment. I waited for each gloss coat to dry before applying more. (Maybe 10 minutes in between?) I ended up doing 3 coats to try and match the shine of the patent leather piping on the sandals. Now I’m just waiting for them to fully dry before I put them back in their dustbag! My before, during and after pictures are here. Let me know what you guys think! They look much better than they did before and now I really can’t wait to wear them out!
P.S.) I even used the black paint to touch up spots and corners on my black rep bags that got scuffed or worn and went over it with the finisher very lightly to seal the paint. This stuff is pretty good to keep on hand to keep our bags looking brand new!
