Back at it with charms, an essential part of Hollow Knight. You obtain different charms through you adventure in Hallownest. Charms are powerful items in Hollow Knight and most of them have unique effects and contain weird powers. But, what really is a charm? The NPC that tells us the most about charms is Salubra (the big lady selling charms). Here's the dialogue that tells us some important details about charms
My dapper gadfly, would you care to know how charms are made? I don't often tell my customers, what with the truth being a little morbid. But you're a sharp one so you may have guessed already.
Few ways a charm appears but mainly it's from final wish, a dying bug's potent desire crystallised into these gorgeous, powerful trinkets.
Now don't go getting too sad. There are exceptions of course, and really, it's quite beautiful, makes them all the more precious. Mmhhmm.
Just think of all the little bug souls that went into creating your collection! It's like a crowd of strangers in your pouch, or purse, or...err....wherever it is you keep them.
So we know that charms are mostly born from a dying bug (or maybe many dying bugs) who somehow materializes his wishes, his will, his determination into a charm. A good example of that would be the Baldur Shell which I believe could have been created by desire of a dying Elder Bardur to protect itself with its shell.
But, as Salubra mentions, that's not always the case. Some charms are appearing naturally like Deep Focus
Naturally formed within a crystal over a long period. Draws in SOUL from the surrounding air.
I believe this is also the case for Thorns of Agony, Hiveblood, Spore Shroom and maybe Lifeblood Heart and Lifeblood Core.
Then, there are charms who were deliberitaly created/crafted (By the way I made up the classification of created/crafted charms, no where in the game is it mentioned, you can call them however you want, but for reasons of convenience that's how I am gonna call them). Here, it's a little harder to determine which charms were created or which one were crafted. To me the difference is that crafted charms were made out of natural materials and which were somehow put together (The materials which compose them may have some magical properties like cristals, but their process of fabrication do not involve any sort of magic). For example, Quick Focus or Steady Body
Quick focus:
A charm containing a crystal lens.
Steady body:
I love the simple design on this little fellow! Very classy! It's made out of a nice, solid, heavy material too.
While created charms involve some sort of magic in their creation. Charms like that that I can think of are Dream Wielder or Weaversong
Dream Wielder:
Transient charm created for those who wield the Dream Nail and collect Essence.
Weaversong:
Silken charm containing a song of farewell, left by the Weavers who departed Hallownest for their old home.
But, all charms can't be classified so easily. Let's take Nailmaster's Glory for example:
Contains the passion, skill and regrets of a Nailmaster.
The passions refers to Sheo, the brother who has a passion for painting, the skill refers to Mato and the regrets refers to Oro. So, I believe the charm was somehow made by Sly to suit any of the three brothers who would prove to be worthy enough to claim it. Sheo was the favorite pupil of Sly, but he wanted to concentrate on art different then the nail and refused, the two others weren't worthy for the charm. So, Sly kept the charm... waiting for someone who would prove his worth.
There are other special cases in charms like Defender's Crest, Fragile charms, Fury of the Fallen, etc. but because I don't want this post to be too long I won't explain my speculations about those.
Let's get to the most enigmatic charms: Kingsoul, Shape of Unn, Grimmchild, Grubsong and Grubberfly's Elegy. You see, those charms represent powerful beings (yes in my opinion grubs are more powerful than they seem), but unlike many charms coming from the creatures of Hallownest like Glowing Womb or Flukenest: These charms do not come from the dying wish of a bug. They were made purposefully with the essence of powerful beings. Now, you could argue that one part of kingsoul came from the diyng wish of the pale king, but I believe that the fragment of the charm was made before his ''Death'' as the White Lady gives you the other fragment while she's still alive. Unn, the Grubfather/the Grubs, the White Lady, the Pale King and Grimm/ The Heart of Nightmare: Those beings are powerful enough to take a fraction of themselves, of their essence and put it into a charm. The charms created are a part of those beings.
The Void Heart is the Kingsoul infused with the void. I don't have a complex explanation for everything XD
There are other charms I haven't mentioned who deserve being talked about (like Fury of the Fallen). You can make up your own idea about those. I'm to lazy to explain each and every charm ;)
