so ive been an "admirer at-far" of the wipeout series for a long time as i adore the entire aesthetic (art style, music, etc.) of the games and they looked fun as hell to play, but ive never been a playstation owner so i never actually got to play any of them until now when ive decided to take the plunge via emulation and start from the beginning.
now it was immediately apparent that there's a bit of a learning curve to this game, and i struggled at first getting a hang of the handling and using the brakes and such, not being able to get past terramax at first. but i took it to time trial mode to practice each track (as well as practicing the perfect launch, which unfortunately i can still only nail like 15% of the time) and got pretty comfortable with the controls and the track layouts. so back i went into the championship, where i could reliably finish first, often on the first try, on all of the first 5 tracks.
i think you all know what's coming next.
so while i was practicing silverstream, i definitely felt why people considered it such a bastard of the track. i took extra time to go over it for several laps, learning how to handle the corners, which boost pads to avoid or take extra caution over, and which of the split paths to take for the fastest time. eventually i was feeling pretty okay with it, and even if i wouldnt win, i could just take a top 3 place and still win the championship, right?
wrong.
doing it in an actual race was nothing like doing it in a time trial practice run. every single fucking time i finish in 5th because i get so tangled up in the bottom three racers' missiles and other bullshit on the first lap, that even if i drive the remaining 2 laps near-perfectly, i just literally never see another competitor for the entire rest of the race. i would save up a missile, hoping that maybe on this last attempt i'd maybe spot 4th and 3rd place in the distance near the end of the race and fire off that missile and maybe reach that top 3, but that never happened. not even the slightest lick of the tail end of another racer ever entered my sight, not even once. and this was only in venom class. what the fUCK
anyway after using up all my restarts and finishing 5th each time, i get that game over and of course i now have to do all the previous races all over again. so even though it goes against my moral code i decided to use the cheat to unlock the rapier class as i felt i deserved it (and i just wanted to see what its like). from my experience on the first track, it doesnt seem unmanageable by any means. however my hands are so cramped up (probably in large part due to having to use the d-pad to turn) that i just cant drive for shit anymore and sooo i decided to take a break and uhh... make this post!
