Mirror's Edge Catalyst's Art Style Debate

My biggest issue with Mirror's Edge Catalyst wasn't the story or open world design. It was the art style. The 2013 announcement trailer looked incredible and so did all of the concept art from 2012-2014. It seemed that they were going for a far more atmospheric approach, even surpassing the original.

As the game progressed, the team abandoned this whole art direction which I found really disappointing. The final game was over saturated with poor variation in the colors used. Red and light blue colors were completely removed from the game near the end of development. There was an extreme overuse of orange and purple. Purple doesn't really fit Mirror's Edge either. The graphics were blurry with an awful shader making the game even more saturated than it was. A lot of environments looked like they didn't belong in a Mirror's Edge game. Mirror's Edge Catalyst abandoned almost all of the first game's rules for art design and looked nothing like the 2013 announcement trailer or any of the concept art from 2012-2014.

I still appreciate Mirror's Edge Catalyst but it did not look like a Mirror's Edge game. I just really hope there's a third Mirror's Edge title which nails it.
