Meet the Queen Machines of Season 5 [PART 2]

Up next, she won’t be popping out a box as a surprise, it’s Lu (u/lppereira)!

Get to know Lu:

My drag name is Lu. I'm 19 and I'm from Portugal. My drag name might be weird but it has a reason. When I'm with my best friends, they call me "Lu" and it's when I'm near them I feel like my most authentic self and because I believe that drag is the expression of your inner self, of your authentic self, I chose "Lu" as my drag name. I also thought about HalleLu/Halle Lu but I like Lu the most.

My drag style is a mixture of a lot of things. I like comic books and movies and a lot of my drag is based on that. I also like campy drag but when Lu wants to feel her oats there's nothing more than she likes to wear than expensive clothes. In a normal day, you look at her and think she owns three companies and, atleast, five yachts. She wears clothes that make her feel like a boss ass bitch, that show the confidence that she has: pantsuits, blazers, golden accessories. For a reference, think Blake Lively in the movie "A Simple Favor" or Blake Lively in general.

My art is very influenced, like I said before, by comic books, movies, tv shows and cartoons. One of my biggest inspirations is Janelle Monae. She can turn any look! When I was young, I watched a lot of Glee and I think my performance got influenced by that. It's very theatrical. Lots of facial expressions.

Why drag? When I was young, society made me think that drag queens were just weird gross flamboyant gay men that dressed up like women so I was repulsed by the idea of drag. But then again, I was a young kid who self doubted his sexuality, loved the gayest holiday ever, which is Halloween, and occasionally would wear his mom's heels and she wasn't home... I'm fairly new to drag. The first season of drag race that I followed was All Stars 4. But I got drawn to it because it speaks a message of inclusivity and of self expression that I love and that I always wanted to see in the world. A few months ago, I started researching more about drag and drag race and there were two things that stood out to me. They were a RuPaul lyric to "Born Naked" ("We're all born naked and the rest is drag") and Sasha Velour's speech in the finale of season 9 as well as the message she transmits to the world through her drag. Drag is not about gay men dressing up as women. It's about everyone being able to express yourself with no judgement. And it's funny that the flamboyant gay men that society made me fear are the ones that accept everyone for who they are and represent a beautiful message.

Promo Look:

It's basically a silver full body suit with blue "wireframes" throughout the body. The hair is a black bob cut. The makeup is very basic, cats eye and blue lipstick and blue contact lenses. And the face, hands and feet are also painted in silver. For the pose, it could be the one in the picture or it could be something like Asia O'Hara's promo look pose with maybe a hand on the face. Does Lu have what it takes to go all the way, or will she just lu-se?

Up next, is a queen who can pur-pull her weight: it’s Saskia Violet (u/rippedlavender)!

Get to know Saskia:

Hey! I’m Saskia Violet, but I mainly go mononymous and identify as just Saskia. I’m 17 years old and currently reside in one of the many capitals of Fashion - London, however I was born in Granada, Spain.

Even though my parents raised me without teaching me little of our Spanish culture or much of the language, my drag persona is heavily based off the heritage; she’s feisty like a diva, beautiful and flamboyant. That being said, my drag style is very adaptive but always has its own signature twist. I love to do glamour, but my style takes aspects of club kid, other cultures and is mostly always high fashion. I do fashion at college which hopefully should help me translate my concepts.

I am influenced by famous fashion designers such as Iris Van Herpen, who give their own twist to fashion and interpret in such a way that is so unique, which is why I tend to support queens like Manila who have their own signature on looks or even Yvie Oddly. My biggest performance influences are the likes of Whitney Houston or Jennifer Hudson, they have a lot of talent and both had/have major stage presence. In terms of lip syncs, I would aspire to be like Kennedy Davenport - but hopefully I won’t ever have to lip sync anyway.

Promo Look:

Saskia wore a off-the-shoulder, black latex jumpsuit that conformed tight to her curvaceous body figure, her waist cinched to tiny proportions. Embroidered into the bustier was the text: PLAYER ONE, surrounded by blue PVC boning that created a maze-like, net form around her torso. Within the lines were characters from games such as Pac-Man, with the the classic retro arcade circular buttons stamped onto her sides and forming a gradient down her pants, the most collecting down at the cuffs just above her luminous yellow heels.

Her black, marcel-wave styled hair was frazzled and teased at the ends, the waves losing their shapes and taking a 80s appeal - lots of volume and full of curls. A neon-yellow fascinator in the shape of Pac-Man was positioned to the left side of her head, with the accompanying ghosts embellished onto her choker that alternated colours, neon yellow, neon blue and neon pink. The entirety of her skin skin was coated in dripping body gloss, specs of glitter highlighting her arms that were mostly covered up by gloves made from the same black latex. Her nails were symbolic of the varying neon colour palette on the look, each one representing a different colour.

Pigments of purple and yellow were smeared onto her lids in a retired, punk-rock 80s fashion, the colour in her eyes non apparent as black sclera contacts filled them. Her face had faint cracks painted on that also covered her solid-red lips. In her hand she held a katana with the handle being made from a arcade game handle, the red on the bulbous sphere at the end replicated onto the blade.

The look was inspired by retro 80s arcade games and how she has become what they are; the unkempt style of her hair and cracks on her face are symbolic of them being left behind for the sake of future entertainment and it’s development.

Will Saskia soar through the glass elevator, or will she be rolled out like the Other Violet?

Next, we have none other than the devil’s fabric, it’s Satina (u/Phillip-Angel)!

Get to know Satina:

Hvad så kællinger?

My name is Satina and I’m from the cold and dark Denmark hidden away in the Scandinavia, which means I have genetically inclined depression. I’m 22 years old, so I’ll soon be ready for gay retirement.

My drag is typically very dark and artsy. Not in a “heavy” way, but I do like some sort of meaning behind all of the fun. I don’t just wear pretty things - I wanna tell people something with my drag.

I’m inspired by people such as Lady Gaga, Lykke Li and Charles Manson. If we are talking about drag queens it would be people like Sasha Velour, Sharon Needles and Brynhildr.

I believe drag is important to our history as LGBTQ-people. Really we have a drag queen to thank for most of our rights. This is a great way to Hobro our history, and on a personal level this is a great way of improving as a writer. Furthermore I’m a competitive bitch, and this is a great way of pushing my creativity.

Promo Look:

For her look Satina has gone very highschool bitchy with her actually clothing. She is wearing a white faux leather mini skirt and a white faux leather crop top. The crop top has a zipper going down the front of it - unzipped just enough to show off some cleavage. The stomach area, that should be otherwise visible because of the clothes, has been covered with a black corset with an extreme amount of different colored wires attached to it, obscuring that part of her body and almost making it seems detached from the rest of her body.

For her makeup Satina is wearing grey foundation and her contour, highlighting and brows have all been done with silver-esque tones. Her lips stand out from the rest of her face by being gold. The entire outline of her face is left untouched by makeup exposing her actual skin, except for some small screws painted on. Along with all of this, she is wearing a black wig pulled into a tight ponytail.

In her right hand she is holding a plain white face mask. To model this look, Satina would be holding up the mask to cover half of her face, like the mask is her actual face and her makeup is what’s hidden underneath it.

Will she match her namesake and prove she’s the most elegant queen, or will she be gone with the wind?

Our next queen is rosy red and shiny, it’s Skarlet Diamond (u/thomas4301)!

Get to know Skarlet:

Hello Everybody! My name is Skarlet Diamond, I am 22, and I am from the spectacular Orlando, Florida! Drag daughter of the legendary Anita Dragname! (I’m actually 17 and from Charlotte, NC in real life)

I would describe my drag style as sexy, funny, and out of the box. Others would describe it as...tragic. Just kidding girl! I live to make others laugh, perform my butt off, and to turn a show stopping look.

I take a huge inspiration from power femme fatales in video games, and that’s how I got my drag name, Skarlet from Mortal Kombat! I also love incorporating mythology in to my drag as well. I love everything to be modern and polished, but with a wow factor to make it my own. I like my drag to be over the top and pack a punch.

I found out about this season because I’m currently on another season taking place on the sub right now. The Amazing Drag Race! I frequently look upon this sub and chat with people to make friendships and feel that sense of community.

To me, drag is our way of letting out the diva that lives within us all. Expressing all the creativity within us, and bonding over it is such a beautiful concept. We’re all on this giant rock we call Earth, unsure of our future and what everything entails, yet drag is something that we have full control of. It allows us to be as crazy, fierce, or spectacular as we wish, and I find that to be an amazing thing.

Promo Look:

For my promo, I am serving full on high tech, futuristic, space robot. I’m wearing a dark silver metallic latex catsuit. The catsuit has “panel like” features on it which are made of aluminum. The panels have piercing cobalt blue LED lights underneath them to emit a soft glow. The catsuit completely covers my entire head, and my face isn’t seen at all. Instead, I’m holding a hyper realistic mask in my hand that looks exactly like my typical mug. (My typical mug is a dark, sultry, smokey eye with sharp brows. My contour and highlight sculpt my face in a sexy and feminine way, with sharp cheekbones and a soft jaw. My lips are my signature maroon.) In place of my face on my suit, it’s filled with a void of severed wires, to show that I took my face off. Instead of a wig, I have thick tubes and wires in its place. The wire hair is long and pushed backwards, similarly styled like this. I’m wearing thigh high latex boots that match my catsuit. The boots emit that same LED blue light from the bottom off my soles. I’m wearing the metallic latex material for gloves as well that blend seamless to the catsuit. My gloves extend my fingers out an additional 2 inches, and come to sharp points. Upon my midsection, right where my stomach would be, is a hollowed out portion of the catsuit that has an assortment of gears and wiring. Spilling out from the hollow section is a few thick chains to essentially give the impression of guts spilling out. The breasts of of catsuit are bare, except for two coin sized, round, glowing circles that resemble robotic nipples on each breast.

Will Skarlet be able to rise above the pressure, or will she just be here to fight?

Next, she is deep, woke and a thief - it’s Soul E. Sis (u/vvr5try)!

Get to know Soul:

When I am in drag I go by Soul E. Sis. I like big dicks, fried chicken and stealing other people’s quotes. This year I will be turning 23 and I am from North America.

My drag queen name definitely has some meaning behind it. I chose “Soul” as my stage name because my drag comes from the deep, dark, moldy parts of my soul. The last name Sis is there to always remind everyone that we’re all just brothers and sisters at the end of the day. And the E is just an E.

In the real world, I’ve been having fun and doing drag on and off for about 5 years, so at this point I’ve dipped my foot in the pool and now know what looks bad and what looks presentable on stage. If that makes sense..

On the outside my drag can be sinister, theatrical, avant-garde and at times, comedic. However, on the inside, my drag persona is definitely more along the lines of a comedy queen. I love to poke fun at SJW culture, the RuPaul’s Drag Race fanbase and just everyday shenanigans going on.

I have a wide, wide range of influences that not only shape my drag persona but also who I am as a person. Artists like Björk and Thierry Mugler definitely have influenced my costuming and outfits.

In terms of how I like to carry myself — Sade Adu — is someone who I adore and want to wear the skin of. I can also be a bit of a Teresa Giudice when a bitch wants to scrap but I crush that down most of the time.

For the first half of my life my ability to be creative was really suppressed in the conservative household that I lived in. In the past few years my love for creative writing and drag has really taken over. Up until this point, I’ve never really sought out a way to exercise my creative writing abilities, but this may just be the fun way to do it!

Promo Look:

Soul is boldly wearing an outfit meant to stomp the runway. Starting with the head, Soul is wearing a charcoal black metallic face mask. She has two guitar-pick, rhombus shaped spikes attached to the back of her face mask that extend to her hair. Her spray painted silver hair is tightly strung up in an upwards buns. Two three-inch, silver, razor spikes pierce out of her ears. Brains and pus ooze from her ears. Her face is symmetrically stitched up like you would see on a ventilation shaft to to contour the angles of her facial structure. Her makeup is basic. She has a pale look to her with slight tints of fleshy red in different areas.

Moving downwards, Soul sports a black collar that is reptile-like in appearance and in texture. The collar extends down, then spirals outwards in strips to cover the breasts. Her breast contour is perky. Underneath all of this, Soul is wearing a black mesh top.

Moving upwards to the shoulder region now! Soul is wearing black shoulder plates that look like aloe vera branches. They start at the bicep area and burst upwards. These have shiny white spikes on the side. More black mesh covers her arm until the wrist area. She has latex gloves on and large black claws.

Starting at her lower rib area, Soul’s waist is tightly cinched using a black latex corset. Her black mesh suit meets at the corset and is tucked inside. That corset is attached to a peplum that sort of looks like a muffin top. It extends all the way to down ground and flows outwards a bit. You can’t see her stilettos but if you could you’d see that they were 8 inch black louboutins. Soul is standing up straight. She graceful places one hand in the air like she is examining an apple, while the other hand 45 degrees outside her hip. She places all the weight onto one foot to give a slight tilt to her demeanor. Yeah, I look gigantic. (https://imgur.com/dTQ3LEB)

Will Soul get to reach the top with her beautiful innards, or will she just say ‘cya, Sis!’?

Up next, pardon yourselves, we have royalty in Veronica Middleton (u/hrhveronicam)!

Get to know Veronica:

Hello! Veronica Middleton reporting for Reddit's Drag Race Season Five!

So, my name is Veronica Middleton, I'm twenty-five years old, and I'm from Chicago, IL!

My drag style is very much if Kate Middleton was a witch, went to Hogwarts, and got sorted into Ravenclaw...all in the 1920s. Very regal, but with a slight vintage and dark feel to it.

I'm very much inspired by the Rococo period; the more elaborate, ornate, and detailed the better, and I think that translates to my drag aesthetic as well.

In terms of performance, I'm very much inspired by the likes of Buffy Summers, Veronica Sawyer, and General Leia Organa, badass women who weren't afraid to take charge while looking fantastic doing so.

Drag is an escape, it's a place where we can be whatever we want to be, and in such a hectic and tumultuous time as this I think that's not only needed, but vital. Everyone deserves a small period of time to escape and play pretend.

Promo Look:

This look is heavily based on the character ‘Maria’ from the classic silent movie ‘Metropolis’! Classic, sleek, and gold, this would be a floor-length gown that is perfectly fitted with some added structure. The shoulders are rounded up slightly, and the hips and bust jut out sharply to give the robotic illusion. A sleeveless garment, there are two thin gold bracelets, one on each wrist, in a further callback to the Metropolis look. The hair is a deep bronze high-ponytail, slicked back and away from the face. The focus of this look really is the structured gown. The makeup is a bit darker, with a deep red, almost black lip, and sleek eye makeup, adding to the jutting angles of the dress. A particular feature of the makeup is that there are no eyebrows. The purpose of this is to appear as sleek as Maria’s face appears in the movie. The minimalist makeup only adds to this high-class fembot illusion. And finally, the only other accessory is a simple golden halo around the head, harkening back once again to this classic silent film look. (http://www.jeffbots.com/maria-large.jpg)

Is Veronica next in line for the Reddit’s Drag Superstar, or will she just be Middle of the road?

And for our final queen, where there’s a way, there’s a Willow Blue (u/jestergirl98)!

Get to know Willow:

Hello, my name is Willow Blue, I am 22 years of age and I’m from Orlando, Florida. My style of drag is very fun and very creative, no matter what I do I always make it fun, it’s easy to say “here, make a look” but it takes that extra drop of lemon juice to make it more interesting, and that’s what I do, I take whatever I get and make it more interesting than what it was first presented as, although I’m not just “Oh let’s add sparkles and make it all happy” I can do serious and I can do sad, I always make sure when making a walk with the look and showing it off I make it sure I can basically have fun with it.My biggest influences are definitely the girls of drag race thailand, they know how to really turn anything and any look into a fun time, when watching the show I saw how creative they were, and it made me strive to become just as creative as them, while still keeping in my own flair.I found out about this sub about 9 months ago, I used to watch things on the fantasy season subreddit, although I have fallen out of that. One day I see someone talking about a season they were putting, I decide to look at it, now, long ago, I used to do seasons at a different place, and that itch just came back to me, I then applied to that season and got on it, and the rest is history.Drag is what I truly feel will allow a person to fully express themselves, when you are in drag you can do anything, the limit doesn’t exist, Drag can be wild, it can be funny, it can be serious, it can be whatever you want it to be. Drag is truly what I consider to be the pinnacle of entertainment, all the performances, all the look, and everything else really make me adore drag and view it as I view it.

Promo Look:

Willow is wearing bright blue contacts, she is wearing a bare gaze, her eyes are wide open, giving her a piercing stare. Willow is wearing blonde hair on the left side of the head, on the right side of the what looks to be red and green wires seems to come out the right side of her head, imagine that one half of the head has hair on it but the other half has wires, it goes down to the bottom of Willow’s neck, with the ends curving up. Willow is wearing a pink dress, it’s starts just above her chest, it goes down to her knees. The bottom of the dress curves upwards, making the bottom of the dress look like a small bowl. Willow is wearing pink thigh high boots that are closed with straps. On Willow’s arms there are sleeves that start at the same spot where the dress began. It’s straight for a moment but after it reaches the elbows it starts opening, this makes the bottom part of the elbows have more movement, the sleeve would be considered a bell sleeve, the whole dress and the sleeves are a cotton candy color, the dress is satin.Willow’s body is designed like this, on the left side of her face she is wearing red lipstick with light black eyeshadow, on the right side of her face it’s silver, a shiny silver. This color scheme happens on her entire body, her left side is normal but her right side is silver, while her left nails are red and sharp, her right nails look just as silver as the rest of her, and they aren’t sharp at all.In Willow’s right hand there looks to be a case of red lipstick, she’s gripping with a full hold, she jerks it up suddenly, so that it’s in front of her face, her right hand then turns itself so that it looks like the lipstick is next to her lip. She then starts applying it to her silver side, throughout all of this, it doesn’t look like she’s controlling herself, it almost looks like someone else is doing this, the lipstick seems nearly move onto the skin but then is brought back to continue on the lip. When she reaches the end of the top lip she suddenly gets it on her cheek, she doesn’t move for some time, after that, her hand opens and the lipstick falls to the ground, her eyes then close as she bends forwards, although her legs stay up, her eyes then slowly close

Will Willow win or will she just leave us feeling Blue?

And there we have it! Condragulations to our lucky 14 queens, all of us are excited to see what you’re going to bring to the table! Stay tuned for Friday 8th March at 6pm EST for the first episode as well as the first challenge, good luck!
