I see a lot of people on here, especially college grads, who are stuck in a help desk role and looking desperately to move on to the next step. I was in the same place, stuck at a help desk, a slave to the ring ring ring of my desk phone. I liked the people I worked with but after 5 months I was no longer developing new skills. I sent out probably 10+ applications a day, that's all I did in between calls. Well I am happy to say I start my new job next week as an IT Security Technician, a title I didn't think I could get for at least another 5 years. It's a government job, the pay is not great, but I'm excited to finally have a title that's relevant to what I studied in school.
Also this isn't meant to be a brag in any way, I just wanted it to be encouraging for those who were in the same position I was. My inbox was and still is full of denial emails.
Some practical advice
Stay strong, it does not matter how many no's you get, all you need is ONE yes, just ONE.
Don't worry about bombing an interview, every interview is a chance to better yourself for the next one. I had interviewers stop me mid way through and tell me I'm not a good fit for the job. That sucks, cry it out in your car for a bit, feel a little sorry for yourself, and then learn where you went wrong and nail that question on the next interview.
If you are in a help desk role, find out what skills you can learn on the side. I worked in the healthcare field and had the chance to do overtime with the desktop support guys whenever I wanted which was a rare blessing, I could ask them to show me how to re-image pc's that kind of thing, just try to learn whatever skills you can.
I also want to make it clear that I had no experience besides help desk, I have a comp security degree from a liberal arts school where I learned absolutely nothing and I am not a genius. It just takes perseverance. Anyway this post turned out longer than I planned, I hoped it was helpful/encouraging to some people.
